Sometimes professors end the first week of classes with a Mashrou Leila concert (squeeeee) and a shot of whiskey. #latergram

First day of class is... you got it, syllabus day! I’m already more optimistic about how student development is gonna go this year. And I’m already wiped!

Year 2 officially begins. Gonna try and post a pic a day, a sort of “an academic year in the life of a trans prof of color in neoliberal times” visual essay. This is day 1 with the summer still with us and students all over campus.

It’s already been out for almost a year but I finally got a physical copy of this piece I got published in a Dutch journal on trans*ing constructs. You’re welcome! #transisbrilliant
My name is T.J. Jourian and I'm an assistant professor in higher education at Oakland University. My research interests center on queer and trans populations, perspectives, and experiences in higher education, particularly trans people of color. My dissertation was on how transmasculine college students conceptualize masculinity and how that is informed by their intersecting and salient identities. You can find me @tjjourian both here on IG and Twitter.

Not cosplay related, but happy Trans Day of Visibility everyone! Just a reminder that my fellow transgender folx are wonderful and deserve the world. It was a long road to accepting and loving my transness and I hope everyone at all points on that road can feel love and support today. Whether or not you're out, whether or not we see your face today, you're loved and supported and deserve to feel proud today.
I also want to remember the transgender people who can't be with us today, those we have lost or those who were taken from us. You are still loved and missed. Rest in power and peace.
It is also of the utmost importance to hold space for those in the community who are disproportionate risk of prejudice and violence, particularly trans women of colour. Things have come a long way for many of us because of the tireless work of trans women of colour, and yet they are often neglected in activism and recognition. I hope that we can do better by these women and protect their rights as they have so fiercly fought for the rights of others throughout history, presently, and no doubt carrying forward.
from @thefader: “Today is #TransDayOfRemembrance. So far in 2017, 25 trans people have been reported as murdered. There are likely many more whose deaths have been unreported or misreported.
To honor their memory, we need to listen to their stories, understand the systems that oppressed them, and give them the respect they weren’t afforded in life.” 💜
Seeing as 2016 is (finally) ending and how healing #TransLoveNov was for me personally - and hopefully for others in some way - I'm now launching #GiftsofDec. Gonna put up a post a day about the gifts in my life. Starting it off with this one, my latest piece that got published today. To me this was a gift that involved lots of people's labors - those of the researchers that produced the pieces I reviewed, the faculty that read my comps from which this piece came, the scholars and activists that gifted the framings I used, the reviewers and editors of the special issue of NORMA that this is a part of, and the research and action that it will hopefully contribute to in the future. #research#scholarship#scholar#masculinity#highered#sachat#transisbrilliant#transisgift
The final week of #TransLoveNov goes to all the amazing cultural artifacts and technologies that brilliant trans and gender nonconforming people are creating for ourselves and our kin. The first day of that week has to go to Her Story (see link in bio for more). #transisbrilliant#transiscreative#transislove
I feel like I just for to spend an hour with good colleagues who do great work in the name of gender and sexual identities for the SAA student development theories class! And oh hey @trans_killjoy, we used your 🔥 JCSD article to frame our discussion of trans student experiences! #TransIsBrilliant#TransinCollege
Hoping I'm spry and with it enough in an hour when the four of us present on #TransinHESA. Head on over to the San Pedro room to talk about trans and nonbinary students, gender tensions, and whatever the fuck else we want (to rephrase Sandy Stone's comment about what trans studies is from last night). #transstudies#transstudiesconference#transisbrilliant
