Q: Do you like vintage or modern vibes in your books?

Not fanatic about crime fiction but Tom had me give this a go. Still yet to be won over by the genre but amazing writing by @lucyfoleyauthor, great pace, great backstories and it all made sense in the end. It will make an awesome movie 🎥
A group of old friends in their thirties, who were the bright young things of Oxford University in their day, meet every year to spend New Year together.
This year, their chosen meeting place is a remote Scottish lodge house, which gets cut off from the outside world after heavy snowfall.
The group have grown apart over the years, but something is very "off" this year, and one of the group will pay for this.....with their life.
There is a definite feel of Agatha Christie about this book. The story goes back and forth between days before the murder and the days following, and the view points of a few of the different characters. Everyone has secrets and it is very difficult to guess who the murderer is.
(Gifted) Good evening, bookworms!
What book are you excited to read?
I recently received a free copy of Lucy Foley's The Hunting Party and I'm so looking forward to reading it soon. It sounds fantastic 😍
"All of them are friends. One of them is a killer.
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.
They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.
Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.
The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.
Now one of them is dead . . . and another of them did it.
The eerily haunting "Jornada Del Muerto" is a synth-heavy song, building into a massive climax with guitars, transitioning into "Waiting For The End". The song's title means "Journey of the Dead Man or Dead Man's Route" in Spanish. The name comes from a desert in New Mexico, where the USA tested atomic bomb Trinity in 1945 (swipe to see, and hit the link in bio for more info), as part of the Manhattan Project, ushering in a new era in human history: an era of fear, pandemic and war. The song also contains Mike singing in Japanese, making it the first time a Linkin Park song has featured non-English lyrics (not counting the Spanish in "Empty Spaces").
“Mochiagete, tokihanashite” is written and spoken in Japanese. It means “lift me up, let me go”. The meaning of the phrase? It’s an eerie spiritual callout to be lifted from this world and to be taken away from the cruel Earth.
Why is this phrase in Japanese? The Japanese, of course, were the first, and so far the only, to suffer the devastation of the nuclear bomb. Thus, it would make very tragic sense that the first mention of this phrase in the album would be in the language of those innocent who fell first. Although this song’s name directly refers to the Trinity test, and not the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, one could still argue that the day Trinity went off was the day the fate of tens of thousands of Japanese lives were sealed.
Swipe to see the official booklet cover of the song. If anyone would like to get a scanned copy of album's booklet leave your email in DM. #linkinpark
