So just like that Sammy is all of a sudden “grown up” and gone to school. I think I was possibly a little bit more excited than him in “preparation” for this day. .
What I want to highlight, apart from the obvious wonderful occasion, is that behind every child going to school for the first time, there is literally a flock of moms and dads faffing about getting everything just perfect. Also thank you for the tremendous support to us who has never done this before. It is weird but you want your kids first day to be so “perfect” for him in every way. (Perhaps I am just over-compensating for my crappy first day at school) BUT putting all that aside is that it is SO important is to enjoy the journey with your kids and to enjoy every minute. Good luck to all the moms and dads sending their kids to the big world. Cheers to the first of many more moments and milestones!
New School Year :: 2019 - First Day highlights
After a relaxed ceremony to start our day, we opened our school year with a joint circle, form drawing, music (pentatonic flute for him - piano for her) and nature study.
We’re using the Nature Study Australia guides for our program again this year and the children had a wonderful time today - lying on cushions under the crab apple canopy, listening to me read about the life of bees and then going on a garden hunt to observe the many bees hard at work 🐝 We couldn’t believe how heavily loaded some of their pollen baskets were!

New School Year :: 2019 - Rose Ceremony
Marlin was excited to plant his very first ‘real’ rose this year, which has the most divine fragrance, and he also had a pruning lesson from Papa. After so many years of these ceremonies, we just stand back and watch Chilli plant her rose very well on her own.
I’ve posted a few times before about our start of school ceremony and there’s a link in my profile to a blog post from a couple of years back, about this family tradition.
New School Year :: 2019 - Pentatonic Flute
I can’t quite believe that my ‘baby’ is oiling and now playing his first flute! 😱🤱🏼 The Three Kings delivered this special gift so that he could begin oiling it in preparation to play on the first day of school. Watching him; live into the story of its creation, carefully listen to how it must be oiled, working each day to apply another layer of jojoba and waiting so patiently for that first moment of playing, has been such a special and treasured experience to share as a family.
We’re using the Living Music from the Heart program again, which we loved for bringing this instrument to Chilli all those years ago. Marlin was so excited today to learn his first note with ‘tweety bird’ fingers, having fun flapping his other ‘wing’ while he played this note. He was also pretty chuffed that he got to play his first song on the flute! 🎶

I finally managed to get these two monkeys to start their new school year today 🎉 In our Summer style of late, we moved gently through the day, calmly easing into a busy and full year. ‘Annual school portraits’, ‘Rose Ceremony’, ‘First Day highlights’ and ‘Pentatonic Flute’ posts to follow.
“Don’t stop just bc it’s hard. The heaviness in your body is what makes you strong.” 👊🏻
Day 3 in the books and I’m reminded today that not all weight is from a scale. Whatever you have going on in your life, let it fuel you to become stronger 💪🏻

The week is just on the downward slope, but so much has happened. I started the spring semester of school, started new medicine, and am trying my best to be a great mama. We've been working really hard on a bedtime routine for Amelia. It's been working awesome for both of us. She's been sleeping in her own bed for the first time in almost a year. So far (which I know it's only been 3 days) I've been organized and getting my work done ahead of due dates. This had always been a problem for me in the past. These past problems have been keeping me from going back to school for a while. Here's to mom's that are trying to balance crazy lives, kids that are making the best of the ride, and making ourselves better.
It feels very much different to be here than the first two years because of many reasons, but I’m so thankful for such changes. I feel mostly blessed for the peace He’s been filling me with even when I went through various emotions, and I pray that this would continue in order to really help me be more like Him. It’s been soooo good to see some faces I missed!💜
We all know the benefits of puzzle building.
We also all know the feeling of first day blues and having to restart that brain into thinking.
We decided to take it slowly and challenge ourselves with a 100 piece 3d puzzle.
Wow. What an amazing activation exercise.

So today I went back to school. After 10 years. The feeling is really amazing! I feel like I am in control of my future and can see exactly where I want to go from here. I'm ready to put my hard work and dedication towards something where I can see and benefit from the results. I know I look super awkward in this picture 😂 but aren't all first days of school kinda awkward? #firstdayofschool#tnreconnect#dontstopmenow
With a massive lump in my throat, I am the proudest dad out there as my eldest gremlin started Grade 1 today!! Just look at our little champ!! Good luck to all the Grade 1 Moms and Dads!!
