Meet one of our panelists, cMoney, Power, Respect: Black Nurses Raising the Bar, Changing the Narrative and Securing the Bag," Ashley Hughes, RN BSN.
Ashley says: "Many people never discover their true talents. Sure, they get their jobs done, but they’re not happy. It’s just a “job.” Finding your passion may seem cliche’, but I can tell you this – God’s always right. It changes everything. It’s a beautiful thing with a career and passion come together. Work is no longer work. You get to do what you love, and in turn, you love what you do. I am a current PACU/OR nurse for Emory University Hospital. I am a full time adult gero nurse practitioner student at Georgia State University. I am the founder of Women and Whitecoats. Women and whitecoats is a platform designed to inspire and bring together women of various backgrounds in the healthcare field. With this organization, I plan to be visible in the community with service projects that help bring awareness to different situations that women face daily. Being a nurse for five years and the nursing community that I have become a part of is more than a career for me. It has ignited a desire for me that continues to grow daily; I want to allocate it with other women who will grasp the importance of mentorship, sisterhood, leadership, and most importantly service to all mankind!" #blacknurseskillinit#blacknursesrock#blackqueen#blackking#nurse#nursesofinstagram#blackgirlmagic#blackboymagic#naturalnurse#melanin#blacknurses#beautifulblackwomen#beautifulblackmen#melanininmedicine#newnurse#studentnurse#nursingstudent#nursepractitioner#CRNA#SRNA#nurseeducator#mood#murse#futuremurse#moneypowerrespect
Let’s face it... it’s kinda thick in these Instagram streets! Yeah the market is saturated... but who cares if you have a badass strategy you can still grow your audience!
1️⃣ Use Hashtags- IG allows us 30 hashtags in each post... that’s 30 different ways for you to be found by a stranger! So don’t use 14 hashtags use all 30... But you have to research them beforehand
2️⃣ Use Videos For Content & Stories! Go LIVE Often!- People like to live vicariously through you... share what a real day is like for you! No fluff, no makeup, no picture perfect life!
3️⃣ Share Valuable Information- People can find motivational quotes and scriptures anywhere... are you teaching them something? Give away tips, action steps, how-to videos... If you give a little for free they will come back wanting more from you... so they will buy!

Happy Friday Goal Diggers 🤗💜 I’m sure this week we all have made some mistakes🙋🏾♀️ Don’t dwell on it! It’s so easy to focus on the negative but push through and focus on the lesson. There is always something to learn from a mistake if we keep an open mind and optimism!! One thing about making mistakes most times you never forget and it hopefully will never happen again!! You got this!! Day by day 🤗💜
During my externship in my ASN program I made a mistake (no one was hurt 🙏🏾) but I felt so embarrassed that I went to my preceptor and told her i wasnt returning the next day😔. My preceptor looked at me and told me I’m not upset or disappointed in the mistake you made I’m more disappointed that you are giving up!! You are going to be a great nurse! We all make mistakes and I’ll see you tomorrow💜 When I tell you I cried all the way home but I returned the next day and I completed my externship and I neverrrrrrr made that mistake ever again!!!! If I dwelled on that mistake I would not be where I am today🙌🏾 I appreciate her kind words😍Be kind to yourself!! You are not perfect but you are resilient and you got this!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Getting into the healthcare field can be challenging. Just like any other new experience, it can also take a while before you feel comfortable.
Being in close proximity with sick people, having a stranger depend on you for care, advocating for others, etc can be tough skills to learn. .
I became a PCT/CNA during my undergrad to gain some experience working directly with patients and nurses. It was the best decision I ever made for my career 🙌🏾. Here’s a few benefits to becoming a PCT/CNA while you’re in school for nursing or any other healthcare field. .
Direct patient contact and communication! Over the years I have learned how to communicate with patients of all walks of life, cultural competency is very important in healthcare. Depending on their age, cultural background, health conditions, etc I have learned how to approach them when it comes to providing care. Patients are not always in the best mood but the way you approach them can make a huge difference in getting them to do something as simple as getting out of bed for the day to ambulate. .
Working with nurses and MDs. As a PCT I was able to see everything I was learning in class actually happen at work. The nurses I worked with would let me review their pts lab values, MDs would answer my questions on new diagnoses I learned and I’d occasionally get to perform task like glucose checks and foleys 😆 .
Getting comfortable with providing personal care. Let me be honest, it takes a minute to get comfortable cleaning up 💩 but it’s part of the job 🤷🏾♀️ so you may as well get ahead start 😂 .
Gets your foot in the door! Build relationships, network and move up! I was able to apply to my Residency program as an internal applicant, had letters of recommendation from my managers/nurses on the unit and gave great examples from my experience as a PCT during my interview.
If you’re thinking about becoming a PCT/CNA before nursing or another healthcare career, DO IT! You won’t regret the experience and great relationships you will form. 😊
FUNNY FACT: I was 32wks pregnant when I was hired for this position 🤰🏾 🤦🏾♀️
