Unlike other owls, snowy owls (Bubo scandiacus), like Harry Potter's Hedwig, are active during the day. ☀️ They actually start out with black feathers as chicks, which gradually turn white as they grow. ❄️ This one looks extremely unhappy with us. And who can blame it with all the changes we're causing in its native arctic habitat? 📷: Diego Delso/Wikimedia/CC BY-SA 4.0

Are you a science person? Or an English person? We’re usually one or the other, and I’m no exception. To me, writing feels as instinctive as walking. Don’t get me wrong—I love science—but if I had to calculate the amount of fuel required to launch a rocket, or investigate the chemical composition of a river to save a species of fish…let’s just say we wouldn’t need to worry about stocking the rocket to Mars with fish filets.
Still, science fascinates me. I love learning how geographic structures were formed, or how forensics solved a murder case. Tomorrow will always be different because of science, and I envy those who are part of the machine behind that. Scientists are today’s pioneers, and it feels like they’re voyaging without me.
But then I realize…every time I work with a different STEM industry, I get to be part of the revolution. I might not be able to calculate rocket fuel, but I’ve certainly been acquainted with the concepts of everything from robotics to pharmaceutical breakthroughs. Every time I make an infographic, I become a vicarious volcanologist, or endocrinologist, or a molecular biologist.
As a private consultant, I’m blessed with so much variety and so many learning opportunities that I never get bored. The part of me that wishes I could be a rocket scientist gets its wish come true—even if just for a day. I suppose being a technical communicator awards me the best of both worlds. And heck, it turns out that despite my scientific inadequacies, you all still saved me a seat on that rocket voyage. And I couldn’t be prouder. In fact, if you’ll allow me, I’d love to humbly label myself an Honorary Scientist.
It may be nostalgia that pushes people to reach for their vinyl, but who says you can't use some modern-day technology to make the experience a little more seamless? @Sony is mixing something old with a little something new through its PS-LX310BT Bluetooth-connected turntable that can broadcast the classic sound of vinyl through similarly equipped speakers and headphones. 🎶
