Gard Leighton passed away this summer at the age of 84. His 10 Day buckle, which he earned in 1995 when he finished for the 10th time under 24 hours, was recently replaced after he lost it and his home in a fire. His legacy will not be forgotten.

Glad to see Hardrock join us in adopting a Pregnancy Entry Deferral policy. In addition to that we also have a Pregnancy Lottery Deferral policy which allows women to skip lotteries and maintain ticket counts when they haven't been selected to run yet.

On June 24, 1978, 35-year-old Pat Smythe was among 68 runners entered in Western States. Pat was joined by friend Mary Healy. The two women had founded the women's Bay Area running organization "Women on the Run." Among other things they wanted to raise awareness that women could succeed at long distances.
Pat succeeded and made history. She was one of only 28 official finishers. She became the first women's champion in Western States history.

22-year-old Australian Lucy Bartholomew ran in the front for the first half of the race. Here she is in the lead crossing The Swinging Bridge before the climb up to Devils Thumb. She was passed by eventual winner Courtney Dauwalter in the next canyon as she slowed. Lucy held on to finish 3rd in her first 100-miler. She will be wearing bib F3 next year. 📷 @luis_escobar
