Dreaming of sunny Zanzibar as we look out the window to snow currently coming down... How's the weather wherever you are in the world right now??

When we were in Zanzibar there was a young family staying in the cabin next to us, traveling from North America with a 6 month old. We thought it was so cool that they took their baby on such a great, far away adventure, a place that is not your typical family friendly destination. One day we hope to do the same.
Yesterday we actually read an article on @huffpost by @andthenwemovedto about all the benefits of traveling with young children.
One paragraph we particularly loved was: "Travel has shown them that though we all look different, we are the same: I find travel as a great opportunity to teach our children about diversity in the world. A 4 year will ask you why ‘some people are black, some are brown and some are white?’ We use travel to educate her that even though people may look different from the outside, we are all the same. Travel has also helped them make friends. My daughter recently made a friend from Botswana at our hotel in the Seychelles. She came to me and said “Mama look we can both swim!” She is learning that kids from all over the world can be her friend, if they enjoy doing what she does." ❤❤ Travel really is the best teacher. 😊

Would you rather travel by boat or by plane? 🤔

If you had all the time and money, what would you do?? Louise would love to learn how to sew and design and make her own clothes. And of course travel to every country in the world, learning about the cultures, food and language along the way.
Ryan would love to travel to every sports stadium across the world and watch a game at each one. And build up his sneaker collection even more, of course!

Dining on the floor - yay or nay?
When we booked our reservation at this lovely rooftop restaurant we were asked if we preferred Swahili style seating or Western. It's Zanzibar after all, how could we NOT choose Swahili style?! Makes it feel all the more authentic 😊 and how often do you get to dine with all these comfy pillows?

It is hard to believe how big these tortoises are until you are right next to them! Did you know they often live more than 200 years??

What's the best breakfast you've ever had?? We've been thinking back and it's hard to decide! Louise loved the breakfast buffet we had in Dar es Salaam because of the fresh tropical fruits, assorted tropical juices, local pastries and local African specialties. But she also loved the churros con chocolate and cafe con leche in Barcelona. Ryan's favorite, on the other hand, was the magnificent #bacchanalbuffet in Las Vegas!

Where's the #1 place you want to visit this year?
Do you always try to visit new places or do you go back to your favorites?
We always try to visit at least one new country each year, plus of course trips to the states to visit family!

Happy new year everyone!
Any big plans for 2019?
We are excited to be welcoming a third addition to the #solemateadventures team soon! 2019 will be a totally new experience for us! But one thing is for certain - we want to keep traveling with our little solemate 😊
Most people seem to think traveling with a baby is not a good idea but we are determined to make it work!
If you have any stories to share of traveling with a baby please let us know 😃 (Ps seeing pineapple plants always amuses me 😅 anyone else?)

The giant Aldabra tortoises on Changuu island (aka Prison Island) were quite the sight to see. There were over 100 of them here and the largest one was like twice the size of me!
They are descendants of the 4 that were originally imported from the Seychelles back in 1919. They totally reminded me of little dinosaurs haha.

Zanzibar was beautiful and we did enjoy Stone Town. However we had a local take us around and he told us a lot about the horrible history of Zanzibar's slave trade. We went inside the slave chambers and learned all about the terrible conditions and treatment these people went through. It was very disturbing, disgusting and heartbreaking. And it really wasn't even that long ago that this all occurred. The thought of how humans could treat other humans this way is despicable. 💔

Who can climb a coconut tree?! After watching "Mr. Butterfly" here climb the tree like it was nothing, Ryan attempted it himself! Didn't make it half as far 😅
