#explorejapan Gunkanjima (Battleship Island - also think of gunkan maki) was the shooting location for Bond villain Raoul Silva's lair, as portrayed by Javier Bardem in the 2012 film Skyfall. The island officially called Hashima is situated off the coast of Nagasaki, and it is claimed that it was once the world's most densely populated place, with a peak population of 5,259 in 1959. This is because of undersea coal mining between 1887 and 1974, when the island was developed to become a self-sufficient town, with schools, hospitals and residences. Completely abandoned after the mines were shut down, the ghost town island has since 2009 become accessible by ferry as a tourist attraction, but because of the crumbling infrastructure, full access is not granted. Its 2015 recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was only approved after agreement between Japan and South Korea that Japan will also acknowledge the use of forced labour from China and Korea on the island up to end of WWII.
