Right are you ready to disagree with me because I didn’t like this book. The concept was great. The plot was even better . Emma Donoghue is clearly a talented storyteller. But OH MY GOD I became so frustrated with Jack as the narrator after a while. (If you don’t know the book, it’s entirely written from the point of view of Jack who is five years old.) I was desperate for a change in perspective and it didn’t come. I know. I’m awful. I’m sorry. I’ll go back into Instagram jail for my crimes.

    Ahh! I loved this book, but I can see where you're coming from. It might have been a little easier to love had it alternated between Jack's point of view and his mom's (I read it years ago, I forgot her name!)

  • @bookchic69 16 March, 2019

    After watching the movie I didn't fancy reading the book. 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • @hangryforfiction 16 March, 2019

    Okay the movie was slightly less frustrating but kinda...weird? 😅

  • @nativebookreads 16 March, 2019

    I found the movie intriguing, sad and good for what it was portraying. I feel you on not changing perspectives though, I read a book awhile back and the POV of a young child was just awfully written and it ruined the book partially for me.

  • @definebookish 16 March, 2019

    I liked this, but I can see where you're coming from on the pov. However I *love* her historical fiction.

  • @lorenarebooks 16 March, 2019

    😩😩 how disappointing!

  • @girlswhoreadaround 16 March, 2019

    A: Hate it when a book you’ve been looking forward to doesn’t live up to expectations. I did love this but can see why you think it would be better from both perspectives!

  • @booknookbykate 16 March, 2019

    Its my next read! I didn’t know it was from the boy’s point of view. Now I’m nervous haha

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @booknookbykate don’t let my review put you off, so many people have loved it ♥️ I just didn’t vibe with it at all

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @booknookbykate let me know how you get on?

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @kasiathebooknerd awh I’m glad you loved it ♥️ I totally get why. It just wasn’t for me. And I don’t know if she is named. I think she’s just ‘Ma’ throughout the whole book but I might be wrong 🙈

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @bookchic69 don’t blame you. I preferred the movie anyway.

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @hangryforfiction I quite liked the movie but yes, definitely strange 🙈

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @nativebookreads yeah i totally get it, it gets too much haha 🙈 and I agree ♥️ I thought the movie was better

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @definebookish didn’t know she wrote historical fiction. I’ll have to check it out. She’s obviously very talented ♥️ thank you!

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @lorenarebooks 😭

  • @paperbackpoppet 16 March, 2019

    @girlswhoreadaround yeah it’s a shame and definitely! I would have liked to have Ma tell some of her story ♥️

  • @booknookbykate 16 March, 2019

    @paperbackpoppet I definitely will. Hopefully I’ll get to it soon!

  • @hangryforfiction 16 March, 2019

    @paperbackpoppet 😅

  • @whiskey_bookclub 17 March, 2019

    I totally get where you are coming from! I loved this book and I get the authors choice of narrative through the eyes of a child it’s very interesting and unique but it can be hard to read at times! 🙌

  • @paperbackpoppet 18 March, 2019

    @whiskey_bookclub yeah, that’s exactly it. I loved it at first but it wore off quickly for me. Can totally understand why other people loved it ♥️

  • @allmybestfriendsarebooks 20 March, 2019

    This narrator was challenging to read, agree with you there!! I read this book years ago, but I still get so creeped out when I think about Jack sucking his mother’s tooth 🙈

  • @paperbackpoppet 20 March, 2019

    @allmybestfriendsarebooks omg what? I don’t remember that part 🙈
