Towel traction for the neck with stabilization of the shoulder girdle / trunk. πŸ‘πŸ‘
.
This video excerpt is from a longer video lesson on Digital COMT, my video streaming subscription service for manual therapists and movement professionals. 🌟🌟
.
Traction of the cervical spine is an extremely effective technique that stretches all vertically-oriented myofascial tissues and opens up the intervertebral foramina (IVF). πŸ‘πŸ‘
.
Not only is it not contraindicated for a client / patient with a pathological disc (bulging or herniated), but it is actually indicated because it opens up the IVFs . 🌟🌟
.
And clients / patients usually love how it feels. πŸ‘πŸ‘
.
Just be aware that it might be stretching tissues that have not been stretched in a very long time (or never), so it might temporarily irritate proprioceptors and cause β€œproprioceptive confusion”, which would be experienced as dizziness and/or nausea. 😳😳
.
So keep the treatment mild to moderate in intensity and the time to under 10 seconds for the first time or three. And then gradually increase the assertiveness as the client’s tissues allow. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
.
And adding in stabilization of the shoulder girdle / trunk as shown in the video lesson, if possible, increases the effectiveness of the technique! πŸ‘πŸ‘
.
BTW, for all you therapists who have been performing cervical traction with your hands, using a towel or pillow case is MUCH easier and MUCH more effective! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

@physioclemens wonderful. Just remember to keep it mild for a number of sessions and gradually increase the intensity as the patient’s tissues allow. πŸ‘
