Posted @withrepost • @thestudentofliterature#BookReview : Iban Woman by Golda Mowe
Iban Woman presents the story of Ratai, who is not so much a woman as regards the social meaning of the word. She is more skilled at hunting than at weaving skirts. War expeditions interest her more than sowing the paddy with other woman of her longhouse.
This book is at once a journey through the very intriguing Iban culture, and Ratai’s quest tofind a balance between her desire to be the perfect Iban woman and her lust for adventure. While reading this book, I was reminded of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart at several points.
I enjoyed reading this book throughout except one or two parts and that's because I’m not a fantasy person. But that is a personal issue. So most readers will love this book.
Thank you @monsoonbooks for the #reviewcopy .
. #QOTD : Since I'm back here after a really long break, I would like to know your favourite read of this year, so far?
Sir Stamford Raffles and William Farquhar are the subject of “Forbidden Hill”, Vol.1 in the Singapore Saga, a series of historical fiction that spans the first 100 years of Singapore. Extra copies are being shipped to Singapore for the bicentennial as people continue to debate which of these two gentlemen played a greater role in the founding of the city-state and its early development. NEWSFLASH: Vol.2 in the Singapore Sage will be released next month and features more early pioneers of Singapore including Seah Eu Chin, Thomas Oxley, Tan Tock Seng, Joseph Balestier, Whampoa, Keppel and William Cuppage. #monsoonbooks#singapore#singaporehistory#historicalfiction#singaporebicentennial#stamfordraffles#raffles#williamfarquhar#balestier#cuppage#whampoa
Kudos to author George Quinn for a successful launch of “Bandit Saints of Java” at Asia Bookroom in Australia. Over 60 people attended the launch and the store sold out of books. Wrote one attendee: "I absolutely loved the Thursday evening event. The speakers were fantastic and so was the audience. I was so enthralled to be in a room full of deeply knowledgeable, culturally sympathetic, linguistically accomplished people. I look forward to future events." #monsoonbooks#asiabookroom#java#indonesia#islam#islamicpilgrimage#muslimpilgrims#woodslane
