Today's the biggest day in a pageant competition...interview day! Wishing my girls all the good luck as they represent Virginia!
Sometimes I forget just how much I love doing makeup! Working full time at the salon doesn't always present opportunity for makeup, but that moment someone looks in the mirror and falls in love with what they see...is so rewarding. You CAN actually give someone confidence! ·
Go knock them dead @mberz314!!

I woke up feeling very grateful for life's opportunities. ·
This week I'm in Las Vegas for the @mrsamericapresents pageant. I've been questioned before as to why I like being a part of this and honestly, it's for so many reasons. ·
First and foremost, I'm not a pageant girl. You'll never see me on stage because it just isn't who I am. BUT, who I am is someone who loves to travel. I am someone who loves people and loves helping and taking care of people. I am someone who loves meeting people and knowing people from all over and I am someone who loves doing hair and makeup. I also, love seeing women follow a dream with all that's in them and can recognize that thier dream doesn't have to be my dream or the other way around. Being one small part of that journey alongside someone else is such an incredible feeling. This week in Vegas each year allows me to do all of of those things and therefore fulfills me as a service oriented entrepreneur. ·
We don't have to have the same reasons for doing things, but if you want life to happen, it's ok to walk out of your daily life and do something different!! And even more so, it is ok for people to wonder why! If it brings you joy, in any capacity....DO IT!! ·
Let's go team Virginia and give them our best effort!!! @missvaforamerica@mrsvirginia2019

What's your thoughts on "Monday"?
You see so many post from people who hate Mondays, and then you see those "hustlers" who claim they just LOOOOVVVE Mondays!
Look, I'm not here to judge, and think you can actually be human and feel both ways! I love my job about as much as anyone could possibly love a job. But when the alarm goes off, and you're tired...a job is still a job no matter how much you love it! And life can sometimes feel like it is on auto-repeat!
BUT! Monday for me is a chance to get the week ready for my team and clients. It’s a chance for me to spend time at the desk, calculating our numbers for the previous week, and month and year! I order retail, I order color and all the supplies. It gives me a chance to work in an area that I don’t normally so that I can appreciate what those employees contribute to the salon. (And man, a receptionist is always under appreciated)
So for me, I’m not one or the other, black or white...I’m usually the one sitting right in the grey area on most topics and I’ve learned over the past 8 months, that it is acceptable AND ok! Just like half of you, I hate the alarm In the mornings, and just like the other half I love getting the week started on the best foot possible so my team can be as efficient and successful as possible!
Tell me, which type of “Monday-er” are you!?!?

This will be my 5th year doing this competition and I love the adventures it has taken me on as well as the incredible friendships it has provided me. · @mberz314 you are an inspiration for many many reasons and a beautiful soul and I cannot wait to style you for your big days ahead! Go team VIRGINIA!!!

Today is one of my favorite days of the month! Every month, I sit down with my team and we do something that’s called a PDM, which stands for personal development meeting.
Included in this little sit down together they have the opportunity to talk to me about anything that they’ve been experiencing over the past month including concerns, suggestions, or overall just general feedback. We also talk about their performance over the previous month and where they are with their goals and we celebrate all of their victories. We revisit our policies to make sure that they are on point, which most of the time they are! (It covers my ass of they're not!)
I believe that this time with each individual, is so very very important. It lets them know that they have my undivided attention for those minutes, and that there is never anything going on behind the scenes that they don’t know about. Communication is key within a salon team, and this guarantees that. This also supports my plan for growth with my stylist and this helps us to gauge where they are at within that plan.
What do you think, is this something that your work environment does for you, is this something that you wish they did, leave me your thoughts below!

Because, yes...I still do hair behind the chair.
I do this because I WANT to and not because I HAVE to!
I think it's important to keep those relationships with the clients who have supported me all these years. Me working behind the chair helps my payroll margins AND me working behind the chair keeps me an active part of the team. ·
I split my time between working the front desk and acting as manager on duty as well as about 24-32 hours a week servicing clients. This has been a perfect combination for me for the mentioned reasons. · @gracefrayy came in and wanted to be brighter but with a shadow root! We did a partial highlight with @davinescolor PROGRESS lighter and toned with @redken shades EQ CLEAR with 9V and a root tap of CLEAR with 7NA. 💗💗

Isn't she lovely?!? ·
Sometimes I just sit back and appreciate all that life has blessed me with. Gratitude is such a wonderful feeling. ·
Through every hardship and every battle, I love learning the lesson and this year has made me find a confidence and a strength within myself that also allows me to feel pride without fear of judgement. For all who have been on my journey, thank you so so much! Trust me when I say, the best is still yet to come!💗

I'm still standing...
The past 24 hours were insane. Sick doggie, health scare with Dad and laying a kitty to rest. ·
Sometimes life tests you so we can see just how strong we really are. My mom was with my dad, my sister is on vacation and that left me to deal. And that's what you do...we never think we are strong enough...but when the going gets tough you will amaze yourself with the strength you actually do have. Good friends and family support you and get you through. ·
Thankfully, I have a solid team at the salon who take care of EVERYTHING while I am away and I never have to worry about it when I just can't worry about it. Ill never stop sharing my gratitude for my salon family. ·
I'm heading back to the salon this afternoon to accommodate my clients today and am so thankful for that happy place that also makes me live a sense of purpose and normalcy. Hug all your loved ones and always have a heart of gratitude ❤️❤️

"Nothing is more precious than the present moment"
When you own a small business...have a relationship...have a family...sometimes staying present is hard. I know I struggle tremendously with this. ·
I ALWAYS think about the salon. Will we be busy enough, are my staff happy and filled, are the clients happy and fulfilled, am I being a good example.
One of the ways I try my best to stay in the moment is to create lists of what needs to be done. List number 1, is the things that need to be done TODAY...as in something terrible will result if it doesn't get done. List number 2 is things that really need to get done this week but not imperative that it's done TODAY. And list number 3 are all the wild and crazy ideas that run through my head and I want to get done at some point but have no time limit.
The point of my 3 lists is so that my to-do list for the day never gets so long that I feel overwhelmed all the time. List number 1 should really only ever be one or two things and sometimes it's actually empty. Then, when I have downtime and need something to do, I can go to list 2 and maybe even 3. I constantly evaluate the lists and move things around as needed. ·
Hopefully this little tip is helpful! I have an awesome app that I use to help me with this organization and I'd be happy to share it with you! DM me and i'll message you with it and how I set it up! For now, I am going to enjoy every single moment of being in NY with my kiddo ( if he ever wakes up 😜) and let the to do list wait for me to get back home!! Happy Sunday everyone! Wishing you all a lot of fun and rest!

My heart is so happy today!! My team has been through a lot with me recently ...and it's time they are rewarded for their talents, their hard work and their loyalty to my small business.
It's always been my mission to provide an incredible workspace as well as a luxurious experience for our clients. I am currently committed to updating and changing something each month (I only pay cash because I'm a sucker for a good budget, so its slow but steady) until we accomplish our goal! ·
New bathrooms ✔️All new towels ✔️Neon sign (for fun of course) ✔️ and now brand new shampoo bowls!✔️
· I've got such a new vision for @1213hairstudio and believe if you're not growing you're dying (thanks Tony Robbins)...something can always be updated and refreshed. There are some things already in the works that I CANNOT wait to share and other things on the wait list. ·
ANY GUESSES ON WHAT I'LL update next??

Sometimes I do hair, sometimes I work front desk, and sometimes I sit at my favorite coffee shop next door @greenbriarcafeandcoffeehouse and work on staff raises!!🥳
As a salon owner having a growth plan for your stylists is so important. I sit down with them even before they are hired to show them EXACTLY how they will grow within my company. •
As a stylist or owner, does your salon offer this? I’d love to hear what strategies work for you! Questions about mine...feel free to DM me🤩

High lift blonde highlights using @davinescolor and extensions with @dreamcatchershair for the win!!!🏆
Part of being your best is using the best! I literally could not do what I do without partnering with quality products. The technique would always be the same, but the results would not! ·
HOW GORGEOUS IS THIS BABE with her mermaid hair!?!?

Did you always dream of owning a salon?💫☁️
The truth is, no. I actually never woke up one day and said “I want to own a salon!” It was always just one small step in the next direction.
When I was in high school, I wanted to be a theater major. However, once I got to university, my dream wasn’t the same as it was in high school! I never felt like I fit in. But it did lead me to behind the scenes, where I fell in love with make up. I had a lot of artists in my family so it came naturally to me that I could see color in an artistic way and people liked what I could do. I began my first job as a make up artist at a mall counter and that’s what led me to going to beauty school.
I was lucky enough that my aunt and uncle owned a hair salon, so I apprenticed under them versus going to a big cosmetology school. I did have night classes at a technical center for my textbook work, but all of my training was hands-on. After several years of working for them, a lot of things changed within the family and I ended up going to work for a big spa nearby. I loved all of the education and customer service that I learned from the spa. But after several years of working there I missed some of what my family salon had to offer. I knew I wanted to do something that combined both worlds. I wanted to open a salon that had a neighborhood feel that my family salon offered, yet I wanted to also have some of the customer service and professionalism I learned from the spa. So from that I decided to open @1213hairstudio. •
It started out as a small salon with very few chairs and the hopes that I would hire people who thought and worked just like me. Unfortunately that was looking through rose colored glasses! Of course everyone wouldn’t be just like me...and that’s a good thing!! However, learning to run a business and manage a team was all so new to me! Thankfully, after 10 years, I have a pretty well oiled machine with a near perfect team! As usual, I’m always looking for ways to grow and I’ve had a shift in how I see myself, now I want to share my experiences as an owner to other new owners just as others did with me to get me where I am today!

What happens when a client no-shows??😱
It happens to the best of us!!! Do you have a cancellation policy in your salon? The truth is in our industry, time is money. When a stylist has open time, it is literally the equivalent of an hourly employee going to work but being told they wouldn’t be paid for several hours. Not all clients see it this way, but all stylists do. •
Things do come up, it’s completely understandable. However, there should be some sort of policy in place to protect the stylists from repeat offenders. At @1213hairstudio we do ask for a credit card to reserve appointments and we do ask for at least 48 hours notice for any changes to the appointment. This allows for some time to try and schedule from our wait list or through social media platforms. The accountability alone definitely reduces the problem as a whole. From there, your policy can vary from what you charge, when you charge and who you charge. The key is to be consistent and fair and to always do your best as an owner to protect your stylists. Stylist retention is just as important as client retention. Happy stylists make happy clients and together equal a very happy owner 😄

Today was headshot day at the salon @1213hairstudio •
I can’t tell you how many times we get calls when we have a new stylist and clients won’t book with them simply because they are not on the website. Headshots are so important because people want to see who will be touching them and working on their locks. •
Furthermore, as beauty professionals our looks constantly evolve so regularly scheduled headshots are so important. My goal moving forward will be at least twice a year so that our clients know exactly who to expect as well as our site looks fresh and updated.
WHENS THE LAST TIME YOU UPDATED YOUR PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT?
Thanks to @remythompsonphotography for spending time with our team today and making sure we all had the perfect lighting and softest smiles!

“If you don’t like me but watch everything I do, you’re a fan”
Look, people suck. Haters gonna hate. 😝Over the past 7 months I have learned this first hand and have been betrayed, bullied and stalked by someone I thought was a completely different person. •
In my 10 years of owning a business, there have been others. They will blame you for their faults, you will NEVER please everyone. People will lie and try to cheat you out of your hard work and efforts. You will feel the sting of the punches but I’m here to tell you those people DO NOT MATTER. Know your truth, know your worth, keep your vision alive and surround yourself with a tribe who want you to succeed. Love your tribe with all that’s in you and support them with all that you can. THEY are the ones who matter!!! Continue to do you and let the others observe it from the sideline. Their jealousy and evil is simply just their insecurity.
I’ve got BIG goals and never stop dreaming. When one door closes it allows another one to open! There is no sweeter revenge than proving the naysayers wrong!!! My team has accomplished more in those 7 months than I ever imagined and we plan to keep on going!! "Just gonna SHAKE IT OFF!" I promise, just when you think the storm is at its worse...the clouds will part and the sun will shine again!!!☀️
