I wanted to love this one but unfortunately it just didn’t happen that way.. Definitely get some Handmaids Tale vibes but this one didn’t have me like that one did. I can see others loving it though. My review is on my goodreads—may contain spoilers!

🚬Gina Ricci takes on a job as a cigarette girl to earn money for her ailing father—and to prove to herself that she can hold her own at Chicago’s most notorious speakeasy, the Third Door. She’s enchanted by the harsh, glamorous world she discovers: the sleek socialites sipping bootlegged cocktails, the rowdy ex-servicemen playing poker in a curtained back room, the flirtatious jazz pianist and the brooding photographer—all overseen by the club’s imposing owner, Signora Castallazzo. But the staff buzzes with whispers about Gina’s predecessor, who died under mysterious circumstances, and the photographer, Marty, warns her to be careful.
When Marty is brutally murdered, with Gina as the only witness, she’s determined to track down his killer. What secrets did Marty capture on his camera—and who would do anything to destroy them? As Gina searches for answers, she’s pulled deeper into the shadowy truths hiding behind the Third Door. • •

The Snakes ~ Sadie Jones
Coming out 7/25/19
“I wonder if it hurts them to shed their skins,” she said. She didn’t feel afraid standing in the darkness, imagining snakes, even with the smell of death in the air.
Synopsis: Recently married, psychologist Bea and Dan, a mixed-race artist, rent out their tiny flat to escape London for a few precious months. Driving through France, they visit Bea’s dropout brother, Alex, at the hotel he runs in Burgundy. Disturbingly, they find him all alone, the ramshackle hotel deserted apart from the nest of snakes in the attic.
When Alex and Bea’s parents make a surprise visit, Dan can’t understand why Bea is so appalled, or why she’s never wanted him to know them; Liv and Griff Adamson are charming and rich. They are the richest people he has ever met. Maybe Bea’s ashamed of him, or maybe she regrets the secrets she’s been keeping.
Tragedy strikes suddenly, brutally, and in its aftermath the family is stripped back to its heart, and then its rotten core—and even Bea, with all her strength and goodness, can’t escape.
A chilling page-turner impossible to put down, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 is Sadie Jones at her best: breathtakingly powerful, brilliantly incisive, and utterly devastating. Thank you @harperbooks for sending me this arc, I’m here for it!! -
I need to talk about Amy @_booklush_ who has quickly become a great friend of mine here on bookstagram💕 This thoughtful, kind, sweet girl, sent me this book that she knew I was excited to read! Amy and I talk pretty much on the daily on here and have gotten to know each other over time. She’s always putting a smile on my face, always cracking me up, and is ALWAYS such a great person to talk to! I’ve had some things going on in my life (I know we all do at times..) and this beautiful girl sent me this just because.. I wasn’t going to let her without me being able to send her something in return, but she knows hers is coming (ain’t that right Amy?!😜).. Book friends are the best friends and this gem I have a feeling will be a lifelong friend of mine, not just through books ❤️ Thank you Amy! You’ve made my day 🤗 -
