I AM OFFICIALLY A LAWYER! 😃🎉 It was 20years ago that I told my mum at the ripe old age of 11 that I wanted to be a lawyer... I started university 11years, 9months ago and today it was an honour to sign the supreme court role and become a lawyer in NSW!
Thanks to David Viney for moving my admission 😊
I always wanted to qualify as a barrister in England and Wales, but there were times it seemed like a distant dream. My mother was married off at 16, and became a single mum by the age of 25. She had no degree and no money, but two little souls and a tonne of responsibilities to bear. She fought against all odds to educate us, because she knew how important it was. She couldn't afford to send me to study in the U.K directly. So I started my law degree in Malaysian University which would allow me to transfer in my third year, so I could then have a qualifying law degree to pursue the Bar. I wasn't happy about going to Malaysia initially, but when I saw how helpless my mum was, I changed my attitude and embraced the experience. I realised that it didn't matter where I went to study, just what I did with that education. It turns out that going to Malaysia was the best thing that could happen to me. Not only did I have the opportunity to network with judges and lawyers on a weekly basis; but I got a scholarship, I studied both English and Malaysian law, I won subject prizes, and I was ranked first in my year overall for year 1 and 2. I then transferred to Cardiff. Upon transferring, I found out that my third year would count as a hundred percent of my degree, meaning everything I did before didn't count. I also really wanted to pursue the Bar, but on my own merit, as I felt my mum done her part by getting me to where I was. I applied to the Inner Temple for a scholarship for the Bar. I constantly heard echoes of people saying it would be impossible for me to attain it because I was a Kenyan citizen, I had no U.K. based work experience, and I had just been in the country for 5 months. But despite all odds, I managed to attain a £20,000 scholarship and also graduate with a First Class Honours. I got called to the Bar of England and Wales on my mother's birthday this year. There was no greater way to commemorate the sacrifices she made to give her little souls the platform to live their dreams. Today, I'm an Associate specialising in International Arbitration; and I volunteer at a project that helps death row inmates.
"I put a lot of research into the part. I worked with lawyers before filming began, so I felt kind of close to the courts. At one point recently a friend said to me he was having trouble with a contract, and I just instinctively said, "Let me see that." You get that feeling that you are able to do these things. It's crazy. I literally took it from him and said, "Well, maybe I can help you with this." Can you imagine that? And I looked at the thing, and I though, "What am I doing?""
Another example of how involved Al is, and how deep he gets into the role, that he begins thinking and behaving and feeling like the character he's playing.

Hey First-Generation ⚖️Legal⚖️ Eagles!!
We ALL have at least ONE - a favorite hype song.⠀
✨When you are prepping for a big day/event, what is your HYPE song?✨⠀
It did not matter if I was preparing my personal statement for my law school applications; studying for the bar; or pulling an “all nighter” at my Big Law job. ⠀
My go-to hype song has ALWAYS been “Shorty Swing My Way” by KP and Envyi. And yes, Envyi is spelled JUST that way.⠀
No matter what mood I am in or what I am facing, that song makes everything👌🏾!!⠀
Drop a word. What is YOUR get hype song?

[ ✨ S O N N T A G ✨
3 Ways to Treat Your Paralegal on National Paralegal Day
October 23rd is National Paralegal Day! From returning that difficult client’s phone call to digging into the legal research for your upcoming trial brief, your paralegal works hard every day to make your life easier. Here are a few ideas to show your gratitude for your paralegal’s dedication to you and your law firm.
1. Grab an extra coffee or tea on your way into work for them. This small gesture will fuel their morning and get their mindset right for the day.
2. Schedule a meeting to give and receive feedback. By engaging your paralegals, listening to their concerns, and giving them feedback on where they stand, you will promote a sense of work ethic and accountability. Check out Brené Brown's checklist for giving engaged feedback here (). Bonus, you might learn some new ways that you can be more productive and engaged in your work through this process.
3. Pamper your paralegals with a gift of wellness. Legal Ease Wellness offers custom approaches for your in-office event that include spa services, motivational & keynote speakers, gourmet teas and chocolates, and more. We can transform your conference room into a wellness event they will be bragging to their friends about for months or even years to come. You’ll be the boss of the year!
