//People need to know that Belly hasn’t been doing this for a year, two or three. He’s been at this since as early as 2005 with his “Death before Dishonour” series. This album isn’t a release on the back of a successful single in “What You Want” – this is a celebration of an almost 15 year grind. What better way to do it with staying true to where it all began? Being an Immigrant.
The cover of this album genuinely put a smile on my face. How many rappers in this game have come from the humble beginnings as coming of the war torn area of Palestine do you know who at the height of their career base their entire album around their origin? This comes with a large risk – as it certainly is polarizing but with the current landscape of American Politics – why not, right?
Numbers sounds like it could’ve fit right on Another Day in Paradise or even on his work as early as “The Revolution” which dates back to 2007 (Swipe). I would’ve liked more of the deep dive into the Belly narrative like on Xion, Who Hurt You & Street Cathedral which capture the essence of the Immigrant story. A lot of you will either relate to this or not and if you do, you’ll understand what I mean when I say you were proud to hear every bar and struggle he celebrates on his road to reaching the pinnacle of his career. These tracks are quite simply – breathtaking.
Mumble Rap did pack a bigger punch than this did but I understand why – this was the Commercial release and on the back of some his biggest singles including “What You Want”, I commend Belly for doing this. Make something that’s not so popular into a brand? Bravo.
Unfortunately even as a fan of the man, the journey and what he represents – this wasn’t his best work as a whole, but I appreciate the sentiment and taking the responsibility of speaking for those who don’t have a voice: the disadvantaged.
