Arctic Tern, Woodfjorden, Svalbard, 1200km from the North Pole. Arctic terns migrate more than any other species of any known animal - up to 70,000km to Antarctica and back to the Arctic every year. Woodfjorden lies in Svalbard's northwestern national Park (Nordvest-Spitsbergen nasjonalpark), where the use of the world's most polluting fossil fuel, heavy fuel oil, has been prohibited since 2007. This photograph is part of an exhibition opening today at the London HQ of the International Maritime Organization, the UN body that regulates shipping, The Arctic: On Our Watch. The exhibition, The Arctic: On Our Watch is introduced by @penhadow and hosted by the Clean Arctic Alliance, which represents 18 organisations pushing for a ban on heavy fuel oil from ships operating in the Arctic. A spill of HFO - which is used worldwide - would be devastating for the Arctic, and by burning it there, the black carbon particles emitted just serve to speed up the Arctic melt. We won agreement for a ban in April - now we're keeping the pressure on countries to stay the course and get the ban designed, completed and enforced! #Arctic#wildlife#birdlife#svalbard#spitsbergen#tern#wildlifephotography#nature#conservationphotography#naturephotography#bird#birdsofinstagram#seabird#polar
