FINALLY getting through more Peru images today. And I’m feeling blown away all over again. I’m remembering the solitude, the slow trekking through 15,000 ft altitude, the constant breaks to breathe. I’m remembering how lucky I felt that around every corner, over every pass was another sweeping, magical view! There were SO many alpine, glacial lakes. So many alpacas. And so much sky. If Peru is not on your travel list, it must be!

Last week I was lucky to go behind the scenes at Taman Safari. These two cuties are TJ, a one year old Sumatran orangutan and Ayu, a Bornean orangutan who turns one today. Happy birthday Ayu and may you one day know the feeling of swinging through trees foraging for fruit.
I have mixed feelings about zoos. While I don’t like seeing animals caged up, in many parts of the world their natural habitat is already destroyed so maybe zoos are a good chance to keep species alive while we try to sort out the mess we’ve made of this planet. One example is the tiger rescue and genome centre where tigers captured in traps by villagers are rescued and tiger sperm samples are being collected in an attempt to save the critically endangered Sumatran tiger.
One thing I was impressed with on this visit was that rules about handling animals and holding them have tightened up a lot. Hopefully we can start heading in the right decision.

“As much as I love traveling to new places, I always love coming back to Canada where I feel the most at home. There’s nothing like that unspoiled taste of nature where I can find myself and reconnect with my environment.”
