If you're looking to start with some basic research to help kids understand more about important people and events, consider checking out titles in the Who Was? and What Were? series. As the publisher puts it "With over 150 titles, Penguin’s Who Was? series tells the incredible stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators, and creators." We recently purchased six titles from the series, including books on Rosa Parks, Frida Kahlo, and Neil Armstrong. As for the What Were? series, the publisher says, "Covering everything from revolutionary battles to natural disasters, social movements to witch trails, Penguin’s What Was? series dives into our world’s most important historical events." We recently purchased What Were the Roaring Twenties, and other libraries in the system have several of the other titles in both series.
If your child enjoys making things, they may like Sew Mini Treats or Sew Mini Animals, both of which have simple patterns and instructions to make cute mini plush characters with felt. The step-by-step instructions are very clear, and most steps include a photo or drawing. Supplies needed if you choose to borrow and make these projects include felt sheets, stuffing, embroidery floss, and embroidery needles.
We also have Stitch Camp by Nicole Blum, with 18 projects for kids and tweens including sewing, knitting, crochet, felt, embroidery, and weaving. Each of these basic crafting skills are represented by three projects in the book, and projects include everything from patches to bracelets to backpacks. The projects mostly use inexpensive materials as well, which is a plus if you don't have a big budget to spend on supplies. This book also includes clear instructions with close-up photos of kids making the projects.
Which “Who Was” book is your favorite? Since my 11-year-old checked out every book in the series that was available at the library, I bought some new ones at Barnes and Noble while they were “buy 2 get 1 free” a few weeks ago. Now I’m wishing I would have purchased more! I didn’t realize how many “Who Was” books have been written!! #whowas#nonfictionbooks#classroomlibrary#teachersofinstagram

Mara has been borderline obsessed with Marie Antoinette since she watched the #whowas episode several months ago. She was super excited to tour the Chateau de Versailles and it did not disappoint...”I wish I could be Marie Antoinette so I could live here, except for the part where they cut her head off. I don’t want my head to be cut off” -Mara Belle #marieantoinette#letthemeatcake#versailles
More books!! I have great ideas for using these books to host clubs with my enrichment reading group. I can’t wait to share their end of book projects with you! I know they’ll be amazing! 📚
