This weekend post our show Friday night has been a bit of a write off, with most of the time being horizontal.
Well worth the blood, sweat and fears, playing for you all with our band @flitenz. There was a killer amount of great music on that night, so thank you for filling the room with your great vibes @sanfranvenue.
I'll be sleeping well tonight, and dreaming dreams.
Captures by @markthompsonmedia, @ewan.pickering, @wellingtonlivemusic.
Lit by the one and only Nic Cave-Lynch.
Sound by Kevin Whooley.
Massive thanks to @pinkoverture for shooting, and @moanaete for warming the stage with her beautiful wairua.
We wanted to create stationery that was distinctively Māori. Something that connects us as wāhine no matter where we are in our journey.
We thought long and hard about how we could do that. We realised getting to simple and user friendly took a lot of work and lots of drafts!
Our first notebook is to capture everyday moments, while being mindful of where your energy flows and the legacy that will come from that.
Each notebook has 📔a definition of Māreikura to share and understand, 📔Karakia Māori to celebrate and embrace us as wāhine
📔A double spread marama layout to record the names of your whānau, hapu, iwi or rohe maramataka
📔A 'moon' icon on each page to record the maramataka phase and/or date so you can practice this mātauranga daily and
📔an explanation of "Ma Rima" our version of practicing mindfulness and living with purpose.
Ma Rima is then repeated on each page so you can recognise where your energy flows to day by day.
This week we will be sharing some videos of how we use the notebook daily - so watch out for those!

'I would like to see people realise that we are not separate entities from nature. What happens to the environment happens to us too.⠀
Different people have different values. What scientists and the general public deem important can seem very different even if they are essentially the same thing. For example, I care about ecosystem services and ecosystem function. The public I engage with are primarily concerned with waterways being fishable/swimmable. They mean the same thing. Healthy ecosystems that function properly will provide services like improved water quality-i.e. fishable/swimmable waterways. However, using jargon alienates people and decreases the strength of the message.'⠀
Is there anything bothering you about the whole eco /green/conservation thing at the moment?⠀
'When people get really angry and preachy. I think it is really hard to effectively reach out to people through shouting and shaming. There are plenty of great examples of how to engage and educate without making people feel dumb.'⠀

As a part of the #OceaninaDrop art movement, I'm really excited to share the Amazing Water People series of interviews with inspiring people who lead water-centered lives. .⠀⠀
Ocean in a Drop is a series of intricate illustrations depicting marine and coastal life, in different parts of the world, fitting into the shape of a water drop. ⠀⠀
It encourages taking time to tap into creativity, mindfulness, and reinforces positive relationships with nature. ⠀ ⠀

😍😍😍😍 Holy. Shit.

Today is Saturday, September 22nd, 2018 and the autumn #equinox occurs at 3:54pm today. Essentially Kāne crosses the Piko o Wākea (celestial equator). However there is much much more to it through the eyes of the ancient Kāne-based lineages that formed an important foundation layer in the peopling of Hawai‘i.
If you are familiar with the first edition of Nā Inoa Hōkū by Aunty Rubellite Kawena Johnson (and John Kaipo Mahelona) you will recognize the diamond shape at the beginning of this video. This is a description of one of the solar-based anahulu calendars. The sun makes a puni (circuit or revolution) in an entire year.
In a system like this there are 36 anahulu of 10 sunrises (and/or sunsets) each Ka Puni o Ka Lā (sun circuit). 36x10 = 360. So we are missing 4.25 days. However if you truly embrace the sun circuit concept it will be readily apparent where those 4.25 days exist. Someone reading this post may in be able to figure it out... Keep in mind the sunrise and sunset positions throughout ka puni o ka lā... Also, a moon that can be described as either Akua or Hua rises at 5:23pm today. Ka‘anani‘au- as time moves space is shaped or as space moves time is shaped. And here we are in the loving embrace of it all:) @homaikapono#oahu#hawaii#mahina#kai#kaananiau#kane#orion#mintaka#akua#welehu#virgo#aloha#wahine#astrology#moon#honolulu#wai#healing#sun#star#hawaiianmooncalendar#ハワイ#オアフ#マヒナ#水#月#ヒーリング

This week I was privileged to attend the first #wahinewalking tour to celebrate 125 years of Women's suffrage in New Zealand. For two hours around fifty women (only saw 2 men!) trammelled the streets of Wellington listening to stories of courageous New Zealand women. Amongst the sites we visited was the wharewaka (canoe house) on the waterfront. Traditionally, Maori women occupied key decision-making positions in society, and recently brought back (another) gold for New Zealand's waka ama (outrigger canoeing) team. These tales of resilience and strength should not, however, serve as a smokescreen for the battles that still rage for equality in all areas of our societies. I was really disappointed to see the results of a recent poll around refugees in New Zealand - almost 60% of respondents felt that allowing 1000 refugees into the country every year was too much. I'm nervous to continue peeling back the epidermis of diversity and inclusivity that New Zealand angles towards the world. What other nasty surprises will I uncover? 😳
I had the pleasure to sit down with Vince Félix last night at his family home, share some time with his kids and his lady Cynthia as she worked some badass tattoos on a client. We discussed longboarding and surfing in general for Longboardarian’s upcoming Podcast series. I’m pumped to share VF perspectives on the current status of California longboard culture.
*ALL SOLD NOW* This is my personal favourite thing that I have made. She is one of the 1st pictures I carved on wood after experimenting with lino but every time I've tried to print her she hasn't come out right. She always looked patchy or ripped the paper or blotchy etc. Today is the first time she let me print her and she came out beautifully🙌 I named this "ki te whaiao" because to me this is about looking to the future with courage and determination.
I have 3 of these to sell. Each uniquely handprinted on A3 sized archival paper.
The price is $80 including shipping in NZ. Payments should be made by Wednesday 25th of Sept and all prints to be shipped Friday 28th Sept. DM me if you would like to have one 😊
Nga mihi 💚💚💚 #art#māori#wahine#indigenousart#māoriart#printmaking#woodcutprint#reliefprint#māoriartist#indigenousartist
*ALL SOLD NOW* k back again with another print for sale. Kids are out at kapa haka today so I'm hiding in amongst the art supplies 🙌 This is something I carved a few months ago and now she is a 'proper' print.
I try to draw wāhine Māori as I see us, strong, determined, passionate & capable and Hinemoa is all of those things, not just "beautiful".
This is an A3 sized print which makes it a little bit tricky to ship safely and this is reflected in the price. I have 3 of these to sell. Each uniquely handprinted on archival paper. The price is $80 including shipping in NZ. DM me if you want one. Payments should be made by Wednesday 25th Sept and all prints shipped on Friday 28th Sept.
P.S. plz know that every print u buy from me is going towards paying for my kids music lessons 😂 parenting ain't cheap ne! ? 😨
Ngā mihi 😊❤
. below is my original description:
"kāhore rā he wahine e rite ki a Hinemoa, tai ana tana hiahia ki te mutunga e hi nawa e hika e"
Passionate, courageous, spirited, romantic, determined, unstoppable, Hinemoa. A woodcarved reflection on our inspirational Whakaue tupuna tonight, sitting on her rock , Iriirikapua. The niho taniwha in the background a nod to her tenacity in the pursuit of her desire ✊💓 .
Here @live.fast.die.old sneaks a wave during a break in the webcast. We asked Albee what score he’d give his effort, and he replied, “I dunno—that’s all I did. A five, I guess?” Video by @wsl benevolent air show overlord, @josh_kerr84.
