A #lightning storm this morning was inspiration to talk about lightening your #dodge#viper . The Viper got lighter in weight every generation and the extensive use of #carbonfiber and other materials plus the #naturallyaspirated engine makes the Gen V Viper lighter than many other high performance vehicles at ~3400 lbs (varies by model). This weight plus the ~49.6/50.4 weight distribution (great for a front-mid engine car) is one reason for the handing abilities and track dominance.
We currently offer over 10 products that are lighter than the OEM parts they replace and more are under development. Reducing any weight will have positive effects on acceleration, braking and cornering and will also reduce wear on vehicle components over time.
The ideal weight to lose is unsprung, rotating weight and also weight near the front of the car and up high as these are more significant to improve handling, acceleration, and braking. Weight off the front of the car shifts balance rearward to improve steering and traction while weight up high lowers the center of gravity. Removing rotating weight reduces power loss to the wheels by reducing moment of inertia while removing sprung weight helps the suspension respond more quickly to the road / track surfaces. It is always good if a part has a secondary benefit to compliment weight reduction. All this said, weight reduction is not a magic wand to improve driving skills and track times, but will fundamentally improve the car.
In professional motorsport cars have a minimum weight requirement but they still spend large sums of money to lighten the cars. They do this because any weight saved allows them to place the weight where they need it for handling – usually by changing out skids on the bottom of the car to shift the weight forward/rearward as desired for the track in question. On a Viper reducing weight can offset parts such as added coolers and catch cans.
