WHERE WERE YOU and what were you doing on 9/11? I had just finished a lecture, returned to my apartment in ShinChang, down at SoonChunHyang University, when Travis called me to tell me what had happened. As I turned on the TV, the images were surreal knowing they were not some special effects fabrication by Hollywood. The tragedy of that day stands forever on this day.
Our climb today was not pre-meditated in honor of 911, however, we climbed the 911 route today on Insubong by mere coincidence that Tuesdays are my personal climbing days and we had wanted to climb it Saturday, but were unable to due to heavy climbing traffic. And, so, while on it, our thoughts could not otherwise not be with those and the families who lost their lives on that day. May we all heal, may God or the almighty force of Good prevail from here thenceforth. ..the climb today on the 119 or Rescue Route was hard 5.10 slab to GoDokGil(just to clarify, emergency number is dialed backwards in Korea compared to the US...and this route was put up by the National Park Rescue Crew). Things thought about, learned and seen were on today's climb... ...if lost like Hansel and Gretel on the way to the crag, just follow the plastic trash like markers(sad, but true and slightly exaggerating-- STOP LITTERING PEOPLE). I picked up quite a bit on the way in. ...do not ever underestimate yourself no matter how long you have been away from hard slab. ...it's fun to go off route and climb where no one has before, even if it's dirty. ...re-use gear you find as long as it is okay. ...saw the first signs of autumn when spotting these fiery red maple leaves on our way out from the climb. ...make sure you reward yourself with some after-climb beers no matter how much you want to lose weight-- great climbing partners are more important. ...be thankful to be able to climb when others cannot.
