The balcony of Mt. Everest.
You’re at 27, 500ft above sea level and you’re climbing in the Death Zone. Your body is deteriorating faster than it can recover. Most are breathing supplemental oxygen at this altitude. It’s minus -20c, you can barely feel your toes and you’ve been waiting all night for the sun to rise, re-energize and warm up your extremities. This is that moment.
As the high altitude cameraman for the expedition, I’ve shot the entire route since departing from camp 4. My smaller DSLR is now a block of ice so I switch it out for the heavier 5D. It’s game time. This is where it counts. The moment you get up on the ridge, it feels as though the entire world is beneath you. Step by step. Breath by breath. You can almost reach out and touch the summit. For now, you relish in the absurdity of the views of the tallest mountains on Earth that are suddenly beneath you. You’re 1,535 feet away from the highest point on Earth.
Stay focused. Remain calm. Dig deep. And keep climbing.
