✨This past June my husband and I moved to the Upper Peninsula, outside of Calumet in the middle of Copper Country. Well, the property came with a perk...deer! Lots of them, at least during the winter months! Our property is considered a "Deer Wintering Complex" by the MI DNR. Because the Keweenaw Peninsula typically receives 300+ inches of snowfall, the deer have a difficult time getting around and finding normal browse. So, we applied for and received a supplemental feeding permit from the DNR to feed both hay and specially formulated deer pellets. Typically, you are not allowed to feed deer in large amounts so as to prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. The couple who lived here previously had been feeding for years and last year the number was between 350 and 400 deer. We now have around 100 and the number is increasing daily. We put out a pound of pellets per deer per day as well as have 2-3 large round bales of hay available for their dining pleasure. The pellets are provided to us (as well as others feeding in the area) by the Calumet/Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club. We are only allowed to feed from the first Monday after January 1 to mid-May (usually they have wandered back to their home ground by then). They are such beautiful animals and we are grateful for this experience! ❄️🦌❄️🌲❄️🦌❄️
