#Engineering_2 🚀🤖✏️💎💡 Turbomachinery is an important topic in mechanical engineering and deals with the concepts of designing machines that can transfer energy between fluids and a rotor. It is used in many diverse systems. From your houses airconditioner to airplanes jet engines. The design and manufacturing of a turbomachine require the knowledge of solidmechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mass and heat transfer, control engineering and so on.
Turbomachines are divided into two general categories:
1. Compressors: in these machines, mechanical energy is transfered to the fluid and in turn increases its pressure.
2. Turbines: in these machines, energy is transfered from the fluid, resulting in the decrease in its pressure, temperature, or velocity.
Like any other scientific field, turbomachinery is an ocean of complex and beautiful concepts. Comment if you are interested in knowing more about it. I would also be happy to know engineers notions in regard to this field.

In a gas turbine engine the turbine blades are subjected to a very high temperature (ranging up to 1590 °C). Hence it becomes necessary to cool it down.
It may not seem significant to you but the holes alone ensures the turbine blades does not melt. The cooling process is called "Film Cooling", where cool air is bled from the compressor stage, pumped into the internal chambers of the turbine blades and through small holes. This layer of cooler air forms an insulation on the turbine blades to ensure that the blades is cool enough to maintain its structural integrity. Of course, they cool the turbine blades to a certain extend which limits the engine thrust a turbojet is capable of producing.
Sophisticated techniques had been implemented to provide the best possible thermal protection or cooling coverage while using the smallest amount of cooling air, leading to improved system performance. As a highly effective cooling technique, film cooling became prevalent in turbine cooling. The mechanism of film cooling is to inject cooling flow through some holes embedded in the material surface, and generate a thin, cool, insulating layer of fluid over the surface to protect it from the high-temperature gas, illustrated in Fig 3.
Since the flow field in the turbine is highly 3-dimensional, and the temperature distribution is non-uniform, some locations are more vulnerable to thermal damage than others. Therefore, in modern gas turbine design, specific cooling performance is demanded at specific locations. To achieve optimum cooling performance, different cooling hole arrangements have been studied in the turbine passage, such as shower head at the leading edge, or film cooling on the pressure side and suction side surfaces, as well as the blade tip injection as shown in Fig 4.
Computing temperature distributions on an actively cooled turbine blade is an enormously expensive undertaking using standard CFD and FEA analysis methods.
Martin Marietta developed this alloy as an equiax type and now also used in directionally solidified type.
Widely utilized for turbomachinery due to their high temperature creep resistance and good oxidization behavior.
