Is silicone actually safe to cook with?⠀
There's not a hard 'yes' or 'no' answer on this, but we do know that when heated (like in an oven), silicone can release compounds that we probably want to avoid. ⠀
1️⃣ Silicon and silicone are not the same things. ⠀
💫 Silicon is an element on the periodic table of elements, and is the primary constituent in silica, or sand. ⠀
💫 Silicon is made by heating silica. ⠀
💫 Silicon is then mixed with hydrocarbons - ie petroleum products in a complex chemical reaction to create silicone monomers, which are then linked together to create the final silicone product. ⠀
Dyes, fillers, or other chemicals can be added to achieve different qualities of silicones, so silicone products are not all the same. ⠀
2️⃣ There is evidence that when heated, particularly in contact with higher fat foods, silicone materials can release chemicals that may be endocrine-disrupting. The EU considers some of the chemicals released from silicone, referred to as siloxanes, to be endocrine disruptors.⠀ Because of this, I discourage the use of silicone in high heat situations; ie, cooking or baking with silicone. For room temperature or fridge/freezer use, I’m more comfortable recommending silicone, in the form of ice cube trays, chocolate molds, spatulas, and alternatives to ziplock bags with products like @stasherbag etc. ⠀
The downside of this rush to buy all silicone everything is that these products are not easily recyclable and don’t biodegrade. So they pose the same broader environmental challenge as all other plastics; they are forever products. ⠀
What about parchment paper - that's silicone-coated too??⠀
A Norwegian Food Safety Authority report from 2017 found that while silicone bakeware did leach siloxanes, all samples of parchment paper did not. ⠀
So, whenever possible, use parchment instead of silicone mats when baking, and skip on silicone baked good molds! ⠀

Each and every one of us has gone through some difficult times in our lives as it relates to our mental and physical health, and mine led me to my very own fountain of youth. ⠀

The mind-body connection is real and health is more than simply eating right; it's about “feeling right”. It goes without saying diet and exercise are important, but a huge component of my health are the constant streams of positive vibes I try to provide to myself and to others. Health is not a one size fits all, but here are the ways that work for me. ⠀

1. Diet - When it comes to getting protein in your diet, meat isn't the only option, and increasing my plant-based proteins has been the healthier way. I eat about a 90% vegetarian diet, and I restrict calories on certain days and fast daily. Both can improve the body's ability to regenerate its entire immune system (which of course mostly resides in your gut). The science behind fasting is truly incredible, and based on my research and experience, it’s been a life-changer, but it does require a lot of research on what works.⠀

2. Exercise is an integral and necessary part of living a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies are built to move, which is something many people don’t do enough of and can be an excellent way to boost the body's ability to clean out various toxins and recycle damaged cell components. I personally haven't lifted a weight in over 5 years choosing a regimen of bodyweight exercises to increase my strength and improve flexibility. ⠀
3. Lastly, when it comes to the mind-body connection, the interaction of my thoughts with the physical material world has been a huge source of interest for me. Our mind can play an important role in healing the body, or in my case, staying healthy in the first place. Regardless of your beliefs, mental perception of the world can guide your immune system in a way that might allow you to respond to future threats. ⠀

I have never been a fish person. The main reason is that I do not enjoy the taste, but the second is because I have known for years that fish eat all the; pharmaceuticals, micro plastics and human trash from around the world. Farm fish is not any better full of antibiotics and cancer all over their bodies.

🍎I was grocery shopping with my kids the other day, and my son picked up an apple to my daughter exclaiming 😲: ‘but that’s not organic and it’s a dirty dozen!!’... .
😩I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry... .
