Lunch at Ushio:
Ushio is located very close to Akihabara, and their ramen is on the extra extra side when it comes to toppings.
I chose the Tori Paitan broth, which basically is a creamy chicken soup that usually kicks in quite heavily.
But this Tori Paitan is pretty milky and mild, and not heavy at all. That’s actually a good thing because of the many toppings that are in this bowl.
So what you see here is their special bowl with asparagus wrapped in bacon, poached egg, two kinds of cha siu, broccoli, and fried onions.
The egg is perfectly cooked, so is the asparagus and the onions and all the rest.
It’s a beautiful mess that somehow still does not knock you out. A special place, and a special bowl. Definitely a new generation of ramen, that twist things up.
Go there and eat this bowl!
My favorite kind of bistro. The talented chefs and sommeliers at @theblinddonkey.jp take great pride in what they serve. The ingredients they use take “farm to table” to a whole new level, where they source precious gems like an almost distinct Heikei Cucumber that was brought back to life by the hands of an older woman who passed the seeds onto a gardener stopping through town. This is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re home (especially with their slight California vibe) Friendly staff without pretentiousness, cooking incredible food and serving unforgettable wines. So many places that gain any kind of notoriety end up becoming rude or snobbish, but not this place.

Tonight’s Japanese Whiskey Tour featured so many incredible tastings. Moon Glow - a 10 year old limited edition, only found in Japan - has a woodsy mellow vibe that stays with you for a long time. Then the three bottles of Ichiros Malt - also exclusive to Japan and very hard to find - are all very unique in characteristic. The red label (my fave) is a red wine barrel aged whiskey with incredible notes of caramel. Other tastings included the Nikka 12 year and the single malt Miyagikyo. DM or email for an exclusive evening of Japanese Whiskey Tastings. We even curate a special “Wagyu and Whiskey Food Trip,” which is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, guaranteed!
Eat, drink, laugh, repeat.
That’s the mode on Japan Food Trips. Tonight was 5 stops of delicious bites and drinks ranging from traditional sake and sashimi, to highballs and kushiage, to Japanese bistros serving beautiful natural wines and bites like perfect pastas, meatballs and Gorgonzola mousse. Come join us!
The Japanese craft gin scene is in full force right now so we’ve been incorporating a lot of new and exciting bottles into our tastings on the cocktail tours. Have you tried any of these? If you’re interested, let us know!
