This moody weather is perfect to start #TheDollFactory by Elizabeth MacNeil. I mean, how’s this for a compelling blurb!
London. 1850. The greatest spectacle the city has ever seen is being built in Hyde Park, and among the crowd watching two people meet. For Iris, an aspiring artist, it is the encounter of a moment – forgotten seconds later, but for Silas, a collector entranced by the strange and beautiful, that meeting marks a new beginning.
When Iris is asked to model for pre-Raphaelite artist Louis Frost, she agrees on the condition that he will also teach her to paint. Suddenly her world begins to expand, to become a place of art and love.
But Silas has only thought of one thing since their meeting, and his obsession is darkening
I’ll let you know how I get on with this one!

I enjoyed this book so much, you guys! It's been getting a lot of praise, which always makes me a bit wary, but it really is everything it's cracked up to be! I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner and at the same time I envy those who haven't read it yet! Outstanding historical fiction, gorgeous prose, a kickass heroine, an obsessed mind, suspense, I could go on and on and I will! In my review, stay tuned! #TheDollFactory#bookblogging#bookobsessed#booklove#fortheloveofbooks#bookstagram
“The Summer’s hottest author” - says today’s Times. Do we have her talking for the bookshop? Of course! Emma will be interviewing her about her novel ‘The Doll Factory’ on May 9th at Midday. (Special limited editions will be available). Can’t wait!
Interrupting this sunny Bank Holiday weekend with a PSA for the next one: BUY (pre-order now) THIS BOOK. If my endorsement isn’t enough, how about a 14-way bidding war/a BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick/plans for TV/high praise from Ian Rankin, among others?
This is a much longer caption than my usual fare, but @elizabethmacneal is such a special talent, and The Doll Factory is a real testament to her brilliance and her years of dedication and hard work. She is an absolute star, and you can find out just how much when you read this - out on 2 May (just in time for the next Bank Hol) and available for pre-order now!
Sorry for being a very antisocial lunch date @jamiejewitt_ 🤣 but I literally couldn't put this book down! Beautiful inside and out, it's the best fictional book I've read in a long time, and I cannot recommend it enough - the link to preorder is in my bio 🥰 #TheDollFactory
Two weeks away from publication – HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?? It’s taken me so long to get this far – ten years of 5am alarms and many abandoned projects along the way – and I just wondered if I could, very cheekily, ask for a hand with the next few weeks.
It sounds trite, but support has made this novel – from my friends and family and you guys coming to my markets and checking out my shop updates, which meant I could then write 3 days a week. And a few of you have DM’d me asking if there’s anything you can do. So I hope you don’t mind, but I thought I’d let you know a few things which would make an enormous, wonderful difference to me:
- Pre-order it: This is a pretty major thing. If you wanted to, you could pre-order a copy on Waterstones (who are running a competition and have a special edition) or Blackwells or an independent bookshop or even (boo! Hiss!) Amazon. Picador really did design the most wonderful cover (it staggers me) so at the very least you’ll have a thing of beauty!
- Tell people about it – on social media or at work or over drinks
- Come to events! I’ve got lots coming up – it’s on a tab on my website (link in bio), and I’d love to see you at them!
Oh and it’s called The Doll Factory (you probably know all this already, and are actually bored mindless about it… but just in case). It’s about art and obsession and possession and love. There is, of course, a pottery factory. And a wombat. It will be published into 28 languages and is a Radio 2 book club pick… And I can hardly believe it’s going to be in shops in just over a week??! Thank you so much again, and I really hope you enjoy it!
And finally, these are some special butterfly mugs I made to celebrate the book. 🦋
