Parents with Children reviewing services from The Tennessee Department of Education please read this and share it. (DID YOU KNOW TO PARTICIPATE YOU MUST WAIVE YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FEDERAL INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT, or IDEA.) It's happening! Please familiarize yourself with the new upcoming Voucher Law that is currently being presented. #KnowYourRights#DoNotGiveThemUp#FightForYourBabies#Advocate
Tennessee's IEP voucher program was signed into law in April 2015, but implementation was delayed a year. 130 families (or ~0.6% of 20,000 eligible students) applied to participate during the upcoming semester. "All along, state education officials predicted low family participation because the $6,000 voucher falls far short of the $16,000 average cost of educating students with disabilities." Applications for the 2017-18 school year will be accepted in early 2017.
These are the first private schools eligible to accept taxpayer money to educate students with disabilities under the IEP voucher program:
- Academy for Academic Excellence in Clarksville
- Bachman Academy in McDonald
- Gateway Academy Learning Labs in Nashville and Brentwood
- Madonna Learning Center in Germantown
- Saint Ann School in Nashville
- Skyuka Hall in Chattanooga
This 2015 bill was substantially narrowed from a potential 120,000 Tennessee special needs students to 22,000 students K-12 with IEPs and "diagnosed with autism, deafness or blindness, hearing impairments, intellectual disability, orthopedic impairments, traumatic brain injury or visual impairments." In order to participate families are required to waive their rights under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. Additionally, "parents must certify to the state that children in grades 3-8 take state-approved exams and verify the public money has been spent on qualified expenses, with receipts." Families can re-enter Tennessee public schools at any time, and their IDEA rights will be reinstated.
AFP Tennessee claimed as a victory the IEP voucher bill, which director Andy Ogles called “a mini-education voucher"

Our Gentle Story of the Week: “Eclipse(L) was born on September 16th, 2016 during a once in a lifetime eclipse of a Harvest moon. She was born to her mom, Maybelle who was pregnant when we rescued her. Maybelle was never allowed to keep her babies, and Eclipse is the very first baby that was not taken away from her. Eclipse is her moms living apology, and our hope that one day we'll have a gentler world for all moms and babies everywhere, no matter what species!” -

“May you never forget how far you have come, for you have traveled many miles to get to this place. May you never forget the starless nights that shaped you and the morning skies that gave you the hope and strength to carry on. For after all the years you have made it through, over and over, Light has found way to you. And even though you still have a long way to go, all the miles you have traveled matter more than you know.” -Morgan Harper Nichols
