I popped into St Thomas hospital. I make a point of visiting the statue of #maryseacole a black woman not given her accolade until nearly 100 years after her death. I wonder what my legacy will be? . What will I be remembered for . Hopefully shedding light wherever I go and my ability to #thinkoutsidethebox . It was a gloomy day, I swear the sun suddenly rose and shun onto her . I'm gonna take that as her saying hello or maybe one great black woman to another . #blackexcellence✊🏾 #stthomashospital#westminster#london
I recently read that when Claude Monet painted the Palace of Westminster he did so from the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital, where I work. If it’s good enough for Monet it’s good enough for me 😊 #stthomashospital#palaceofwestminster
This time last year Joel and I were chatting about what life was going to look like when our baby bear arrived. It was beautiful outside, I felt fantastic, Joel was working in the yard, and I looked at the deck and decided it was time to stain it.. After all, Cal wasn’t due for almost 2 weeks. So I sat Indian style and went to town about an hour later my water broke. Cal wanted to join the party! All was going well and then things got pretty bananas. Cals heart rate dropped several times, finally pushing us to do a C-Section. Calvin was absolutely perfect!
I can remember looking at him with in amazement. Since Cal was in such a hurry to join the party he was a bit early and had to join the NICU for 5 days, he was having a tough time breathing. After 5 days he was ready to bust out of there and meet Ninja! We left the Sweet nurses at #stthomashospital and made the journey home. The journey has not stopped! Tomorrow we will officially celebrate our baby bears first birthday. Our love for him and for each other grows deeper everyday. He is such a loved baby boy! We are so grateful for all of our family, friends, and friends to be that love him. It takes a village❤️
T-1565 (4 Jun 14): After 6 chemotherapy sessions and 16 fractions of radiation to my chest I was relieved to leave the hospital and seek some sort of normality. Being allowed to work flexibility during that period really helped me take my mind off the crazy changes in the rest of my life #deutschebank#stthomashospital
So a year ago today our beautiful, amazing, clever son Nelson had his @advancedbionics Cochlear implants switched on!!
For our followers that don’t know, Nelson was born profoundly Deaf, and is unable to hear anything, he was tested with sound up to 125dB which is the equivalent of a jet plane taking off in the room. Nelson was fitted with @phonak hearing aids at the age of 11 weeks, unfortunately the hearing aids could not even give him access to sound.
After lots of appointments all over the south east and London and an MRI scan Nelson was given the ok to have bilaterally Cochlear implants, this would mean a lengthy surgery to fit the device inside of his head and ear. The surgery was a great success on the 14th June, he then needed time to let the swelling subside and his body to adapted to the implant. Just over 5 weeks later we traveled to St Thomases hospital in London TV crew in tow for his activation.
The video you are hopefully watching, shows the moment that Nelson hears sound for the very first time! His reaction is subtle but pretty amazing and heart warming. We had watched some videos of children crying when sound was played, let’s be honest it must be a pretty odd feeling hearing for the first time after over a year of nothing!
We have never been under the illusion that his implants are a miracle cure, and not a decision we made on the spot. Nelson will ALWAYS be Deaf and we can’t be sure of the end outcome and hearing levels with them. Sign remains an integral part of our lives but spoken language should follow.
A quick word on the NHS, with out them none of this would have been possible as the process cost 90k, all the staff from the start have been top class.
