#LGBTQHistoryMonth: A group known as the "Little Darlings" was a group of LGBTQ youth who grew from attending Valley Voice meetings. Valley Voice is believed to be the first known LGBTQ advocacy group in the Rio Grande Valley. They began holding meetings in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of the first of many teenagers who attended Valley Voice meetings were Frances Marsh and her sister Helen Marsh. Through these meetings, the two siblings met many other LGBTQ teenagers from across the Valley. Some of the other teenagers who regularly attended were named Orlando, Gabriel, Byll, and Joseph. Two of the Valley Voice organizers, Alicia Lugo and Laurie Coffey, dubbed this group of teenagers the “Little Darlings.” In the early 1990s, The Little Darlings volunteered at different Valley Voice fundraisers, events, provided community education, helped organized Pride celebrations, and even performed an original play that they wrote on the Stonewall Riots. They also provided support to one another, and hosted social outings. Marsh, using the name ‘Phrances’, began writing a column for Valley Voice's In Touch magazine called "From The Teen Side", where she gave advice and wrote about important issues for LGBTQ teens in the Valley. The Little Darlings are remembered for their important role in raising visibility and providing support to the teenagers in the Valley’s LGBTQ community.
