These intricately crafted silver jewelleries carry the culture & the tradition of the tribal communities. Adorn yourself with Kutch Katha to be a head turner – be it an #eveningparty or as a #casualwear.
The Kutch region witness settlements of various tribal communities. They use jewelleries to mark their tribes’ identity or for particular occasions, e.g. Bungri or Phul are worn in helix by Rabari & Bharvad men & boys; Nagali, spring earrings are a sign of marriage. There are around 45 kinds of earring designs developed by these communities. .
Wearing ½ to 1kg of silver jewellery is a daily affair for traditional Jat women. Tribal communities mostly being nomadic in nature & living on bear minimum resources wrap themselves with silver in the purest form because those are their way of investments, kept under high vigilance.
Traditionally, these jewelleries are also worn to ensure protection and good health. Women wear broad kadas with poky nail like projections on the surface, which are believed to provide safety from wild animals when they are in the forest, rearing cattle & collecting wood. Thoriya, a stud for the cartilaginous cavity of the auricle, is said to be important for acupuncture points. .
Kutch, being a port district, has historically maintained trade relationships with Sindh, Persia, Arabia & Europe. Sarafa Bazaar in Bhuj, which is around 200-250 years old, has been the traditional silver market. Trades with Sindh faded with the increasing tensions between the borders. .
The 2001 earthquake had a huge impact on #kachchisilvercraft. Many workplaces & houses of #silversmiths & tribal artisans got destroyed. The following decade is marked by industrial development in Gujrat. However, many small-scale & tribal artisans turned to wage labour & some remained unemployed.
Kutch Katha is Rangili's tribute to the tribal communities & the small-scale artisans.
