Graeagle, CA • Fall 2018 Just absolutely love this area! This quaint little town and undeniably picturesque place in California offers some amazing camping, fishing, hiking, biking and more. We’ve spent the last two weekends there! The first, celebrating an incredible wedding, the second showing the in-laws around town. 😁
A peaceful Sierra sunset to kick off your week. Happy Monday.
Lots of photos of Washington streaming through our feed due to all of the northbound thruhikers up north, but we can’t forget that there are people enjoying all sections of the trail right now.
We were packing light for this day hike to Clyde Minaret, and didn’t anticipate having to traverse across snow - so it was touch & go for a moment here without our ice axes 🤪 lucky for us there was no shortage of jagged stones to carry and help break any potential falls.
It seems as tho every time @mackelphip & I go #backpacking together, the weather takes a turn, thus marking the beginning of winter.. way earlier than normal. We’ve gone twice now, both in September 🍃🍁🍂, & we’re currently batting 0 for 2.☘️🌨❄️☃️ . The first time, we were grossly unprepared, being that it was in the CA #sierras, & barely survived our multi-day #backcountry excursion. But this time, here’s how we prepared for the 🇨🇦 forecast (note this post is NOT sponsored): 1. @outdoorproducts 6’x8’ lightweight tarp. I’ve had this tarp since 2015 & it’s still going on strong 💪🏼 I purchased mine on @amazon. Net weight 2.24oz
2. #terrahiker 2 person #fourseason tent ⛺️, footprint included & can be purchased on Amazon. Absolutely love this tent. Super easy set up, lightweight & price point is fantastic! Net weight 3lbs 12oz
3. We lined the bottom of our tent with a mylar blanket & we were nice & toasty all night, but if you have a 3-season tent, it’s a good idea to put a mylar blanket between the tarp & footprint layer, another at the bottom of the tent and a third between the tent and the rain fly to trap the warmth in. I made fun of @jen.r.8.t.r for bringing 10 mylar blankets for 5 ppl/3 tents but they were #clutch 👌🏼. Net weight 2.24oz ea
4. 2x @thermarest Neoair #AllSeason SV regular size with an R-Value of 4.9. It’s a bit tricky to blow up, so be sure to watch their SpeedValve how-to video and practice at home before heading out. @mackelphip is 6’ so the length seemed like it barely fit him, but we needed it to be 20” in width & 72” in length to fit inside our sleeping bag. This pad is good for side sleepers too FYI & available @rei. Net weight 3lbs for 2 pads
5. @bigagnes_ Cabin Creek 15 degree 40” Double. Good for snuggles 👫 and #🥜sTo🍑 body warmth. Reviews are mixed, but with our combo of pad, tent & mylar linings, we were hot 🔥 in 12F/-11C weather 💁🏻♀️💁🏼♂️. The sleeping pads conveniently & perfectly fit inside the lining of the bag which prevents the pads from moving mid-sleep. #sizeDOESmatter as there’s no room for larger pads in that liner. REI doesn’t sell this anymore, but it’s still available on Amazon. Net weight 5.6lbs
I can’t even begin to fathom the history in these hills. The years of miners walking around hunting for gold, slowly building towns, towns burning and being rebuilt and the history of all the mine shafts that were started because of... quartz that lead to gold. Thankful for these times I’m able to spend with these guys trying to find history that’s left behind. #gold#sierras#mineshaft#goodtimes#deep#damn#family

It's been a rough month so far, first the catalytic converter went out in the van, then someone smashed in a window, then yesterday I lost my solar panels on the highway. But today we climbed mt. Russell, which was my first 14er, and there is nothing like being in the back country to make you forget about all of your problems. I really couldn't be happier, thank you danielle and kat for the great weekend!
