Via @apexharmony - ENDANGERED LOGGERHEAD TURTLE CAUGHT ON DRUMLINE
On Wednesday last week, the Apex Harmony Crew were faced yet again with the sad sight of an endangered Loggerhead turtle fighting for life after becoming hooked on a Queensland Shark Control Program drumline on Queensland's Gold Coast at Rainbow Bay.
Approaching slowly, it became apparent that this turtle was exhausted and distressed. As she surfaced for air we could see the hook caught in her lower jaw before she struggled to dive and escape.
We called the QSCP Manager who said the contractor was on the water replacing a net further north along the coast. The contractor attended about 3/4hr later.
The hook came free from the turtle's mouth as she was dragged towards the boat. This meant the turtle was not taken to a rescue centre and we understand it is rare that this happens anyway. So the welfare of this turtle is now uncertain though we did see her surface for air once after her escape.
We do not know the damage that may have been done by the hook or how she will cope after such a stressful experience.
Turtles and Dolphins often come to feed off the bait on these large hooks – put in place by the Queensland Government's Shark Control Program.
This turtle was lucky in that a Sea Shepherd crew was there to report this before it was too late, unlike hundreds of other marine animals who lose their lives to this outdated system every year.
156 turtles were caught in QSCP gear on the Gold Coast (2001-2019) and subsequently recorded as ‘alive’. Green – 23
Leatherback – 11
Loggerhead – 120
Olive Ridley – 1
As little as four were taken to care after the ordeal of having a shark hook through the mouth or other body part.
A further 17 were dead.

This is a photo I took from yesterday that really justifies this sharks size with @oceanramsey swimming just underneath her pectoral fin. The reality is that this experience should not be such a rare event. White sharks and most species of sharks are disappearing at a alarming rate. There are so many human impacts, but the biggest reason that these impacts on shark populations continue is the perception that sharks like Deep Blue are monsters and that they are actively targeting humans as a food source. This perception and fear of sharks stops people from caring enough to make a change. However I’m seeing the change in perception grow and it needs to keep growing. This caption below is a repost from @originaldiving - - - - - -
If this photo demonstrates one thing, it's that sharks are not man-eating monsters to be feared or hunted, they are beautiful, living marine creatures that should be respected and protected - shark numbers are dwindling from fishing pressures and by spreading awareness you can help international efforts to preserve these gentle giants. diving with @oneoceandiving team @email@example.com@camgrantphotography

I never allowed my introverted nature to stop my elevation. Stay focused on your goal and you can achieve anything. Be brave. Be authentic. Be yourself. Never allow anyone to make you feel like you aren’t enough. The same person that people didn’t believe in is now a consultant for Fortune 500 companies all around the world. Yes that’s me! Rise up...I’m happy to say that I close deals in heels and sometimes it’s my slippers. 😛

Today, I found out that someone I really loved, believed in and trusted... behaved in a dishonest way toward me and my 7-Eleven business. All day my mind has been in a tug of war between thoughts of "She betrayed me. How could she do that to me? I always treated her kindly and fairly." and thoughts of "Be compassionate. Try to understand why she did it. Forgive her. She had a reason why she thought it was the right thing to do." My stomach was a little upset and I was a bit distracted but I still finished most of my work, hugged my kids a lot, and went to spin class." I believe there was a reason this happened now... it was meant to protect me or teach me. This person was also working on my waterproof hats... a key person actually. I'm trying not to feel disappointed. xxSabina
