Hot days and fast running are not the best combination but like starting a business in a bad economy, there is no better time to do it. A good running buddy just msg’d me @notquittingjustyet and said it’s a terrible part of the year to be aiming for quicker times but in a way it’s good to power through the heat and by the time the weather cools down we get even quicker.
I had some time to think about this today and it’s like starting a business. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can flourish in a booming market. But if you succeed in a depressed market, the best is then yet to come on the upturn. I guess it’s the excuses we give ourselves that delays our success stories. |
Sub 20min 5km, I will catch you by end of Feb 2019. But for how it’s sub 1h48min HM next week.
You think I got it right by powering through the heat this summer? I certainly makes sense to me
#flashbackfriday to solo sunsets 😍.
The theme of my struggles for the past few weeks or so is striking that perfect balance between work, life, training, and everything else in between.
My training suffered when I was in Cali, and I have to admit, it's not like I hadn't anticipated that. I managed to squeeze in a couple of adventures, which I'm really happy about; that said, I was only barely managing to maintain my mileage or any of my sessions, for that matter.
For the last few weeks since I got back, every morning I just woke up exhausted and feeling like there's miles and miles of work ahead of me. Never ending things to do. It's been a very bumpy ride settling back down after work travel, but it's starting to look up 😊. I've gotten back to running regularly, sorting out life admin, and what have you. It's far from perfect or ideal, but at least I have running back 😁.
I haven't completely fixed my jetlag, and I'm still struggling with finding balance in my day to day, but I feel like I'm in a much better place now. It helps that I've learned to mentally deal with exhaustion and continuing to plod along despite discomfort, and it also helps that I'm surrounded by people who are supportive of putting my well being first.
How do you cope with balancing work/life/training?

Ending my Friday with 5 miles 🖐🏼 I switched up my running routine this week to coincide with the @NYRR#RacetoDeliver on Sunday. Earlier this week I ran a 6.2 miles, this evening’s run clocked in at exactly 5, and I’ll finish Sunday off with 4 miles for the race. Will total to about 15 miles for the week which is a little less than I’d like considering my training has slowed down a bit. May do a quick 5k or even 2 mile shakeup tomorrow just to add a bit more but am happy with my expected mileage. Cold weather can’t keep me down 🥶🤞🏼

Four years ago I left my comfort zone and took a leap into the unknown. For a small town girl who went to an equally small liberal arts college to move to a city of over 200,000 people as a single young adult, it was a BIG leap 😂 but it has been the BEST, most rewarding, and humbling four years of my life. I've learned a lot about myself as a person and I can only hope I can continue to grow. As the mural says, my ❤ belongs to Des Moines.
This backpacking trip feels like a lifetime ago. A distant memory before every overnight trip ended with a few hours hiking out in the pouring rain, before the smoke from the forest fires threatened so many places that I love, before summer truly set in. In reality, however, it was only a few months ago, three nights in the backcountry of British Columbia sharing a half dozen dehydrated melas a day and stories from trails before with @wilderness_addict. Just under a hundred km on our boots, “a thousand” waterfalls (according to the valley name) and a seemingly endless supply of glaciers hiding around every bend in the trail.
I think about this trip with a fondness that is typically reserved for distant memories. Weekends with my childhood best friend on her ranch riding horses and eating canned potatoes paired with t-bone steak, hot summer days spent eating more raspberries than I would pick in my grandmother’s garden or nights spent sneaking out of my parents’ house as a teenager just to lie in a field of hay watching the aurora dance overhead with the boy who lived next door (well… the next farm over to be more accurate). 🏃🏼♀️: I got in a quick shakeout 3 miler after work today. TGIF am I right?! Tomorrow is supposed to be our peak week long run and we’re running 11 miles! Or attempting to! It’ll be the true test to see if we’re ready for Albuquerque in two weeks!! 🦌🎄It’ll be a bigger step up in long run mileage than I typically like to do during half marathon prep, but hey, I just ran a freaking marathon! I can do 11 miles no prob, right?! Guess we’ll see tomorrow! 😜🤞🏻Have a great rest of you Friday y’all!
#tcsnycmarathon finally gave me back my running mojo. Since my operation it has been such a struggle to get fit and back running again. I lost my love of running because every single training run was such a battle. Then suddenly during #newyorkmarathon I realised I was really enjoying myself. When I got to mile 20, I actually though wow only 6 miles to go and I feel ok, instead of “6 miles? How the hell am I going to finish?” Last night I went back to my running club, already expecting the worst, yet when I started running I was pleasantly surprised. Now I feel really excited about working on building up my speed again. #runningmojo#runningmojoisback#movedme#runnersofinstagram#tokyomarathon2019
