This clip was inspired by two things
1. An amazing lesson I took with @curtisdtaylor
2. listening to my all time favorite album ‘Of Kindred Souls’ by the master, Roy Hargrove.
Still have a lot of work to do, but I am blessed to be humbled and inspired by God, my mentors and the Artists I aspire to be. #BAM
Watching this, and thinking back to when I used to see Roy walk into Smalls at 2am and play, everything about him as a human being and as an artist makes me think of the great Louis Armstrong quote, “What we play is life.” Roy Hargrove’s sound was beyond words can describe…so much humanity, love and soul, steeped in the jazz lineage. You hear Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Miles and so many more, all embodied in Roy’s own unique musical voice.
Understanding the lasting impact he has had on our generation, one of the MANY things I greatly admire is how he internalized the history of this music to develop his sound, lyricism and feel, and brought all of that with him into today’s culture.
When I hear “September in the Rain,” I hear all of the influences of past generations. And when I hear “Forget Regret,” I hear the sound that has become much of today’s sound in our music. It’s all connected.
Thanks keyonharrold for posting this clip.
In the name of Roy ✊🏿 The Legendary #RoyHargrove was a school in and of himself👑. I wish I had known him better personally and had the blessing of indulging in music making with him. Many nights I let fear, intimidation, and ego keep me from the jams—even when I was shedding’ hard. And once our legendary brotha transitioned all I could think is if I hadn’t run and hid from Jazz I might have got to “touch the hem of his garment” more and maybe even been blessed to create with or at least share a band stand with him. The last place I saw him in the flesh was at @zincbar. So, though my performance leaves much to be desired (ain’t been in da shed in a while), I summoned up all the love to raise him up and try to honor his legacy with song after attending the beautiful celebration of his precious legacy and life @jazzdotorg 🙏🏽 We love and miss U #RoyHargrove ✊🏿👑 Thank U to the beautiful & talented @chelseabaratz for capturing this 💖 And thank U to my GENIUS brothas @keyonharrold@mauricebrownmusic & @chrisrobonline for the ivory & brass hand holdin’.... And thank U @melaniecharlesisdflower@supremeuniter for making sure a sustah could get to the band stand to pay tribute 💖

Legendary pianist #CedarWalton would've celebrated his 85th birthday today – here's a throwback from his 2011 performance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival with the late #RoyHargrove, photographed by @ScottChernis.#TBT
I wanna say Rest In Paradise to one of my favorite Jazz Legends "Roy Hargrove"... His Music was so Beautiful and Soothing! The one thing that I respect from him is that he was a risk taker! He didn't mind trying something new, or mixing up his music with different artist fans wouldn't expect to hear on his albums. His music had an authentic sound, he was Creative and original in a way that words can't describe! Your Music will live on forever! #royhargrove#riproyhargrove#youllbemissed#jazz#jazzlegend #🙏
Transcribed one of my favorite Roy solos of all time off of his trio record - Klactoveesedstene. Still in awe that Roy is gone, but he forever left his legacy. Enjoy! #jazz#RoyHargrove#loveneverdies#Parker’sMood
I am in disbelief that Roy Hargrove is not with us anymore. I can’t express here in words just how much his sound, music, and soulfulness have influenced me since I began playing the trumpet. So, I’ll let his performance speak for him. I could have posted dozens of live performances that are just some of my favorites, and this one has always captivated me. RIP. ❤️ #royhargrove

To the world he was Roy Hargrove but to me he was my Daddy. Words can’t describe how much I’ll miss your infectious laugh and the way you could instantly put a smile on my face. Even during your time here you couldn’t always be with me physically, but I knew you were always there for me, supporting me and loving me. I know that won’t change now that you’ve passed on.. I’ve gained the best guardian angel💜👼🏽. -
Thank you everyone for your kind words, even the people who I’ve never met before. To hear how much my dad has influenced/inspired you all means so much to me. #restinpeace#restinpower#royhargrove#riproyhargrove
