Sometimes I think that the Rolex sub hype is kind of boring. When I look at the sd4k it put a smile on my face...

From my collection of Rolex memorabilia, this fantastic catalogue page with the superb Rolex Dato Compax Ref 6036, an Oyster signed chronograph with full calendar, also known as or “Jean-Claude Killy”. The image depicts perfectly the pre-tool watch era, when Rolex was still producing some complicated watches or sports-dress ones, most times around the Oyster case theme.
In the early 1950s, Rolex catalog was dominated by Oyster Perpetuals, Ladies models and the mighty Datejust.
Back then, the 6036 was one of the latest iterations of the Full calendar chronograph. The model shown is typical for the American market, with the signatures in English “Chronograph”, and straight “Anti Magnetic”. And that lovely American style Jubilee bracelet, never mind the clasp shows Swiss Made, the oval links are the tell tale.
Of course no endlinks, those were seen for the fist time in catalogs in 1954.
Ref 6036 features the monoblock body, characterized by the bezel being part of the case with pyramid style indexes, alfa hands, no-numeral at 12, just the applied crown. Open 6s and 9s.
No doubt this is as classic complicated Rolex as it gets. Today these watches command fortunes in auctions, specially when they are not refinished, which unfortunately happens very often. Also hands are commonly replaced.
Yeah it’s just a catalog image but it is a good placebo while a save for an original one.
