Paul Robeson was a maverick on the silver screen until he officially retired in 1942 from film acting due to continued racist portrayals of Blackness. His first big screen role was in Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 BODY AND SOUL which was a silent “race film.” Race films were the predominant films that Black Americans were allowed to see nearly always in segregated theaters or in all Black areas. Some of the major Black film studios were Lincoln Motion Picture Company (1916–1921), and most notably Oscar Micheaux's Chicago-based Micheaux Film Corporation, which operated from 1918–1940. On his posters, Micheaux advertised that his films were scripted and produced exclusively by African Americans. Sadly today little of Micheaux’s meticulous work survives apart from Body and Soul. Here Robeson plays in dream like scenario as both the good man and the shifty violent villainous preacher. Body and Soul has seen a few restorations and releases since being rediscovered around the Paul Robeson Centennial in 1998. In 2016 through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, hip-hop artist and community activist Jasiri X premiered his original new score for a newly restored print. There is so much to be said for some good quality relaxation time! We often put it so low down on our list of priorities but actually it’s so beneficial to us both mentally and physically, we should be making some time for it every day, even if it’s just a quiet-ish 10 minutes with a cup of tea and a biscuit! Just before Christmas I treated myself to a spa day (oh ok and a facial too 😉). It was so nice just to switch off for awhile. The best bit was I managed to fit it in between school runs! I explain more about this in my new post on livingprettyhappy.com - The rise of the leisure centre spa - I would love for you to pop across and have a read, the link is in my bio. If nothing else it’s a great excuse to talk yourself into some well deserved spa time! #robeson#relaxation#relaxationquote#happydays#wellbeing#discoverunder1k#livehappy#myhappyplace#selfcare#recharge#lifestylebloggeruk
