Cecilia has officially been in my care for 1 year. She was estimated to be around 8 months old and 3 1/2 feet when I first got her from a family on Craigslist that didn’t want a big scary snake around with their new baby.
She’s grown to be about 9ft and weighs approximately 55lbs. From a 41qt tub, she’s now in a 6ft enclosure. And don’t get me started on her poops... Within 1 year, she’s grown significantly - more than double in size. Reticulated pythons are a big responsibility and require a lot of attention, so if you want to get one, please take into consideration their size and their needs.
I love my big apex predator and I’m looking forward to her growth. Not too excited for her increased size of loops...
A week later, Red Velvet is still mouth gaping but not as intensely. It’s a notable improvement 💓This is only the second time in 3 weeks I have handled her just long enough to get her into the scale.

While cataloguing everything from last year I just came across this and can’t imagine how I forgot this snake! Or why it didn’t make it into #ScalesandSkin. Actually I do know: it was terrible at posing! Despite the incredible colors, these snakes are so meek that their only defense is to flop around like a wounded worm and then cover their heads with their own coils. Not very good at posing. // This is one of those jungle jewels that is so rare, that common names are pretty pointless. I could call it a checker bellied snake, in this case Siphlophis cervinus is a far more accurate description. I know they are nocturnal, I know they’ve been reported to lay 3-6 eggs, and I know I can count on one hand how many I’ve seen in the last twelve years. But man those colors!
