"I’m the only one in the family
without a biblical name.
Shit, Xiomara isn’t even Dominican.
I know, because I Googled it.
It means: One who is ready for war.
And truth be told, that description is about right
because I even tried to come into the world
in a fighting stance: feet first.
Had to be cut out of Mami
after she’d given birth
to my twin brother, Xavier, just fine.
And my name labors out of some people’s mouths
in that same awkward and painful way.
Until I have to slowly say:
I’ve learned not to flinch the first day of school
as teachers get stuck stupid trying to figure it out.
Mami says she thought it was a saint’s name.
Gave me this gift of battle and now curses
how well I live up to it.
My parents probably wanted a girl who would sit in the pews
wearing pretty florals and a soft smile.
They got combat boots and a mouth silent
until it’s sharp as an island machete." -THE POET X
‘I denounce because though implicated and partially responsible, I’ve been hurt to the point of abysmal pain, hurt to the point of invisibility. And I defend because in spite of all that I find love.’ .
It’s amazing that a book written over 50 years ago still has so many poignant points to make on the subject of race. Despite being a bit too long at points, I honestly learnt so much from this text and cannot, in my right mind, deny its significance and place in the literary canon.

People are never who we think they are, so it is advisable to get a complete background check on a person before we make any opinion about their personality. Such is the case with Ove. At first he will come across as a cantankerous man that nobody liked.
But as the story progresses, the character of the ove unfolds from the back stories and we will start to sympathize with him, knowing that he is what he is because of what he has suffered.
He imprisons himself in grief of the death of his wife and being forced to retire, he convinces himself that his life has little value since everything that he ever loved has been taken away from him.
Loneliness surrounds him so now he wants to end his life to join her wife in heaven to live with her peacefully.
However he is always inadvertently prevented from succeeding by a nosy vivacious family and stupid neighborhood as he calls them. He is unwillingly being thrust into friendship that drags him out of his shell.
The different characters he encounters in his neighborhood brings back a hope and a feeling of being needed brings summer days into a gloomy life of Ove.
Together the whole neighborhood saves Ove's sidekick turned archenemy from being taken away by men in white shirts shows triumphant turnabout how people are capable of touching the live of one another.
This book is a light and heartwarming tragic comedy that has different types of lively characters that echoes the sentiments and it will make you go on roller coaster of laughter and tears and the lovely memories of Ove with his wife expands with love can have a hold over us and we learn to appreciate life with Ove.
The writing is simple and held me in awe. In the end you can't help but fall in love with Ove.
QOFD : Which is that one book that made you feel good? What are the things that makes you happy?
Kinda missing my purple hair lately. 😂 I guess I’m mostly missing having a darker color and doesn’t fade quite as fast.
The pink is just faded enough that I can do something else and I’m torn between a couple different ideas. 😂
