Let’s talk about The Caspers!
I seem to recall local music authority and CFRC DJ The Weave calling them Kingston’s greatest band. They definitely deserved to go a lot farther than they did. After this excellent record of catchy indie-pop on #pfrecords in 1995 they were ready for their next big step and entered a battle of the bands with the winner getting valuable assistance with professional recording and presumably inroads with some music label people. At the contest, the judge got wasted and had to leave, so the bartender took over as judge and awarded the prize to his buddy’s band, a mediocre classic rock covers band. The Caspers quit after this demoralizing blow and it is a great shame. If you know this band, you know they were poised to be one of the next big things out of Kingston.
The good news, is copies of their CD, Driving Along A Massive Dam, tend to turn up here and around town, and we get to keep this document of a great moment in #ygkmusic forever!
If JP drops by I’ll make sure I have the story straight, but this is how I understand it!
