Lots of my clients ask me - what is Fascia? The best answer is that fascia is meant to be flexible, pliable, and strong soft tissue. BUT it may often tight and restricted as a result of injury or stress. Most of us suffer from this in our head, neck and shoulders which can result in us having headaches due to the tight fascia and/or muscle tension.
The Sub-Occipital Release technique focuses on releasing the fascia surrounding the skull to provide pain relief, better mobility and decrease headaches.
The sub-occipitals are a group of four small muscles that attach at the top of our neck and are responsible for head movement; rocking, tilting and rotating to either side. These muscles also stabilize the head!
This self relief technique can be utilized to stretch and soften the sub-occipital muscles and to allow more space into the upper cervical (neck) and occipital (base of skull). Step by step:
- Place your hands around your head, thumbs resting at the base of your skull, either side of your spine.
- Sit back, get comfy and relax.
- Allow your thumbs to gently sink deeper I to the skin, do not increase pressure. - Allow the thumbs to move into the skin with your breath.
- Hold for 2-3 minutes.
- Repeat 1 x a day for regular headaches.
We would like to welcome to Susan to our dental team.
Susan joined us after completing a degree in Dental Hygiene and Therapy at Teesside University in 2014. "I enjoy my role as a Hygienist/Therapist as it allows me to provide exceptional oral care to those I come in contact with. I take pride in my work and always strive to give patients a thorough experience where they leave with the knowledge to take care of their periodontal health at home and the relevant oral care methods to suit their needs. I want to develop further in my chosen field and look forward to gaining more experience in treating patients with implants." "I am very passionate about the prevention of periodontal disease and am motivated when patients see the good results of better oral care and continue to put to practice better oral care." #meettheteam "I am also very interested in cosmetic dentistry as I plan to undertake teeth whitening training in the near future and facial aesthetics." "In my spare time I enjoy travelling, spending time with my husband & family as well as painting/ sketching."
