We beat Willie Nelson! Congrats to @paranoid_style for cracking the top 15 of Robert Christgau’s 2018 Dean’s List — the best albums of the year from the legendary Dean of American Rock Critics. We recorded a bunch of songs at Inner Ear Studios and mixed here at the Orchard. You don’t know Christgau? Google him. Then you’ll forgive his early 90’s website.
Today marks 2 years of the extinction of Pique Recording, Oakland. I miss it a lot. I feel like I cut my teeth in this space (still doing so now). In a politics frenzied post Ghost Ship Oakland, it’s as though it just wasn’t meant to be. I guess it takes putting out an arson fire in your own home to reconsider life a bit. My situation happened just 2 months after Ghost Ship. I was on the 2nd floor so smoke poured in through the floorboards and there was the impending threat of the fire sprinklers going off above. I threw guitars into cases and draped plastic over as much gear as possible - all the while trying to breathe and think clearly. All I grabbed initially was my main acoustic guitar and hard drives (priorities in check!). Luckily I didn’t loose any equipment. I was homeless overnight but had a community to fall back on - I’m very grateful for that. The owner of the building illegally sold it before repairs could be made. A developer’s goldmine. Myself and 21 other people were forced to relocate. •
I realize I’m being a little cryptic on the details here, but the experience was very traumatic and it’s not the easiest for me to revisit. Ask me about the details (lots and lots more) in person if you’re curious. Many thanks to my old boss, Evelyn Masuda, from Sunset Music SF who gave me a place to live for a few mouth while I saved and planned for my relocation to LA. Also, there is a large helping of awesome recordings that were made in this space. I’m very thankful for all the experiences and wonderful music created here in a rather short amount of time. A partial list, in no particular order includes Snakeskin, Vesper Sails, Covet, Will Durkee, Kamerin, Vincent Randazzo aka Leche Malo, Bottom Cafe, Nic Smith of Vs. The Torpedo and Earthquake Weather, Annelyse Gelman, Ex Architects, The Fell Swoop and many more. Much thanks to everyone who has supported me in this rollercoaster of a journey. I don’t know what’s next, but I’m ready for it and you better believe that it includes lots of music making 🤘🏼 ❤️
