Here’s where I’m at with running. ____ Last May, I had run 3 marathons in 13 months. I was physically exhausted and nursing an ankle injury. But, more than that, I was mentally tanked. I had run one race strong but slow, one with bronchitis, and the third with my bum ankle. I wasn’t achieving the strong PR’s I was aiming for or that I was seeing in training. I kept pushing, but too hard and refused to listen to my body. And fell out of love with running. 😱 ____ It took the better part of 6 months of giving myself permission to only run when I felt like it. To not train for any races. And seek the joy and flow of running I once had. I’ll be honest, the deep love isn’t fully there yet. Coming back to running has been difficult and entirely humbling. I always prefer to run outside...I mean, with views like this, how could I not? 😍 And in general, so many things I prefer about running outside. A funny thing happened this morning, though...I ran a little over 5 miles on the treadmill at an easy pace and I didn’t hate it. I also ran around 3 on the treadmill yesterday. I could have run outside today, but out of convenience I ran at @equinox after I taught this morning. It was actually a great run and I had good thinking time, which has been a struggle lately. I got to wondering during this run...maybe I hate it less because my mental muscle is stronger than it used to be when the treadmill was the most boring thing in the world...food for thought 🧐 Anywho, all this to say, while I will always prefer outdoor runs, I can no longer say I hate the treadmill 🤷♀️ And for all my treadmill haters out there, with a different perspective and as you become a stronger runner, it may change your thinking too 🙃 Has anyone else had this experience? #treadmillmiles #perspective #dcrunning #runningmotivation

It was a beautiful morning out today. 5 miles of run fun under the moonlight. With a temperature of 70 at 5am it would seem that Florida is ready for a return to summer time. But I am okay with that because i was ready to go into hibernation mode in the cooler temps 🤷🏻♀️. . And since I forgot to post last night and need the accountability, I am mostly over the cold that I had caught so was able to attend swim class in the morning (2235m in about an hour) and got in 75 minutes on the bike trainer last night 21 miles). Now to go take some vitamins and continue eating lots of vitamin C so that I stay healthy! I got to do the thing today - I got to go for a run 🤩 but I’ll be honest. This run wasn’t what I was hoping for. Marathon Training W7D4 🏃🏻♀️ Started the day with a tough workout 💪🏻. . . Yasso 800s: 1 mile warm up, then 4x 800m sprints with equal recovery. 5 miles total, had a proper sweatfest going on, and my lungs were feeling it 😂. . . This was the first interval training workout of the marathon training plan, and something different from what I normally do! Definitely something I'll need to work on 😅. . . This is what the wise @thebarbdelgado described as the “dog days” of training🐶. She was right - running 12 miles after a long day at work is hard. I almost thought about turning my 12 miler into a 5 miler. But, if I did that, I would have just been pushing it to later in the week along with my 10 and 18 miler I also had left. I'm at about 2.5 weeks of a 6 week "no running/gentle walks only" restriction from my doctor. I don't remember having to wait this long after the birth of my last two kiddos before I was able to run again. Maybe it's because I didn't feel ready as quickly as I do this go round, so it wasn't as hard to wait or the time just went by quicker... either way, during the many hours of daytime newborn sleep, I find myself dreaming of trails like this one, running deep into the mountains, and exploring miles and miles of single track. After driving through a snowstorm, I ran a 5k. The trip took over 3.5 hours, which was more than a hour extra due to the snow! Everyone is a beginner in the beginning and if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Soon, I began to enjoy challenging my body in new ways and working parts of my body that running doesn’t. I’m going to miss this gym and these views! Today was 6 X 6:00 (4:00 at marathon pace and 2:00 at 10K pace). It went by so fast! -Wednesday- Busy day started with going to the local climbing gym for the first time 🙌, a day of work, and finished up with a solid 60 min sweaty run at the gym. Farthest I’ve run in almost three months and I’ll chalk it up as a victory. Thankful for today, this tank top that I think is so cute, and starting to think about running more than every other day. I’ll get there and soon I hope. On a side note, I was so nervous at the climbing gym that I tied the rope through the belay loop instead of my harness, so now I get to do it again next time. 🤷🏼♀️ Felt really good to move in different directions though. Back on the treadmill for the first time in weeks. Definitely felt weird. Literally the first quarter mile I was readjusting my stride and fixing the incline. I put it on 2% until I felt comfortable then went back to 1%. Today’s workout was a progression run. And I felt like I nailed it. Was singing during the first 2 miles. PRESS FORWARD. 🦅 • W8D2 of training; quick recap. This pic is from yesterday’s workout where I was supposed to have a brick workout with swimming 2,500 yds straight (for the first time ever in my life) followed by a 45 min tempo run. • I was so excited/anxious for the swim challenge, and I went to the Y and saw there was only 1 lane open which was great while swim lessons were going on. I was about 900 yds in post warm up when I was told the entire pool would be used just this week for a special winter break kids program. My heart deflated and I was so upset at myself that I couldn’t finish this challenge (heck, I didn’t even know if I could period). Saved by the class? • So out of the pool I went and got my run on. I was experiencing a bad headache since mid afternoon so perhaps it was also a blessing in disguise. • Guess what people?! Life happens. We deal with the waves (haha) and keep moving forward. Sure, I’m talking about working out here but this applies to other aspects of life too. We need to be flexible and adapt in order to experience real growth and progress. • And you know what? I’m going to get after this swim workout Saturday. Over the past few weeks, I have gleefully been jumping out of bed at 4:45 extremely excited to run. It’s been what feels like an eternity since I’ve found so much joy on the run. I’m even kinda sorted starting to love treadmill runs. *gasp* I know. Here’s what is bringing me joy on the treadmill: 1. A towel that covers all the numbers. I’ve only used my Garmin twice since the end of July (both times in Oct). No need to let the numbers get in my head just yet. 2. Obnoxious punk music. I know nothing about punk music and I only listen to it on the treadmill. 3. I wear my glasses to the gym & take them off during the run. I can’t see a darn thing and for all I know I could be running on a beautiful trail. 4. #flystyle - today the douglas fir (this color!💚) pocket joggers helped me channel the “bouncey legs” feeling Coach Dean inspired us with at #BAnnaCamp. I was hoping to get out for my run before the snow started but by the time the sun came up, it was coming down fast and furious so I had to dust off the treadmill that I rarely use because it’s down in the basement where Tom works. This summer, the plan is to have a dedicated space for the treadmill so hopefully next winter this will be my view instead of the basement wall and I don’t have to work around Tom’s work schedule.

Today was my 1st mile back after 4.5 weeks of running rehab due to injury. It was slow on the #dreadmill but it was worth it. I could seriously feel all the endorphins filling my body from my head to my toes. Followed it up with day 26 of #lg30x30 💪🏻 I get to try the mile again 2 more times this week. Started my training back yesterday. It was supposed to be speed work but I still didn’t feel strong enough to go through all of it. I preferred doing a little bit more mileage at a slow pace. The last time I had an 80+ mile week, it ended with a 22 miler at an easy pace that I couldn’t even finish because I was so tired (I had to tell @featherstonenutrition to drop me around mile 15 because I was just wrecked). Today the week ended with a 20 miler that had 10 miles that were supposed to be between 7:15-7:25 pace. I chose 7:19 because treadmill paces are weird and don’t go in 5 second increments for some reason. Anyways - 6 miles at 8:00, 10 miles at 7:19, 4 miles at 8:00. I finished this run. On tired legs. At a fast pace. After the @chimarathon and @marinecorpsmarathon I really questioned my ability to go after the goals I have. & the comments I found online didn’t help. This week my body amazed me with its ability to do what I used to not be able to do. All of that to say - if you’re struggling with your training right now, if things aren’t going your way, I see you. I feel your pain. But, as long as you’re not injured, push through. The lowest of lows can be followed by amazing things. 58 days until Boston.
