Today, children’s book author Cleopatra Alexander joined us at our Edward Neisser Library to graciously donate and sign copies of her latest book series, Shiny the Sea Star! The books teach children about geography, rivers, and the idea that we are all connected and can make friends anywhere. Special thanks to trustee Kate Neisser! Yesterday afternoon, Erikson president and CEO Geoff Nagle presented on the importance of relationships and nurturing experiences in a young child’s life at @elmhurstcollege. DuPage County residents, early childhood professionals, and students gathered to learn more about building a community around early childhood experiences. Thank you to Elmhurst College and Bensenville School District 2 for partnering and hosting this incredible event.

Why is • TEXTUAL • EVIDENCE • so hard for many students?! I’ve been racking my brain recently trying to find a way to make students realize that the evidence you pick ACTUALLY has to prove what you want it to prove 🤷🏼♀️ Yesterday and today we worked on this by having students share their findings from their T-chart and letting the rest of the class vote 🗳 on whether each piece of evidence was actually relevant.

On a daily basis I find myself talking about • MY • KIDS • do this, my kids like that... and if you were just overhearing my conversation you’d think I have my own children. I don’t, but I feel like I do. It’s insane to me how much I love my students because I never thought I would care about them as if they were my own. 👩👧👦 These kids will forever hold a special place in my heart and I pray they are all experiencing the joy of the Christmas season 🌲 Picture repost from @misshuch

• FIRST DAY BACK GOT ME LIKE • whew. 😅 It was a day - a good day - but a day. I probably should have come in yesterday to work but oh well 🤷🏼♀️ I loved seeing my kiddos and actually getting my steps in for the day for a chance but I am WORN OUT. 1 day down, 6 more to go. 🏃🏼♀️

Strong relationships 💛 are the foundation for strong academics 📝. Have you tried this relationship-building activity with your class yet?
The gist: give students an opportunity to anonymously answer this one question. What will you learn? Swipe for 3️⃣ examples from teachers. Also, in case you haven’t heard of it, this idea was described in a great book by Kyle Schwarts, titled “I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for Our Kids.”
1️⃣ is from @pencilsandplaygrounds. She reflects “I put off this resource for years, thinking that my students would just voice their concerns. However, many of our students don’t know how to tell us what’s going on in their lives, but allowing them a quick safe space gives them a voice. And there’s nothing more important than that.”
2️⃣ is from @magic.in.fourth. She says this was set up in the library at her school. See her account for close-ups of some answers.
3️⃣ is from @learningwithmisspollock. While this one is not anonymous, the responses are still very honest and heartfelt.
