Today I want to talk a bit about disappointment, and what you can do in the face of it. .
There are two principle forms of disappointment: disappointment that we feel with ourselves, and disappointment that we feel with the world around us. .
This first form of disappointment is both the more damaging form and the more treatable form of disappointment. When we’re disappointed with ourselves, it’s likely because we’ve failed to meet a standard we’ve invented. Whether it’s our appearance, behavior, or work product, in some way we fundamentally believe that our efforts came up short. Some of these self-imposed standards are actually driven by external factors (e.g. trying to look a certain way), but once we internalize them, we treat them as if they’re our own. .
Resisting this perverse temptation is not easy. But conversely, because we’ve internalized these standards, we can also choose to create new standards driven by things we can control that bring us joy. Rather than lament that we don’t weigh some arbitrary number, we can set goals around exercise and feeling good that we’re able to control. In fact, it’s this sort of disappointment that can help vault us forward towards creating new and positive standards by which to hold ourselves accountable. .
The second form of disappointment is more challenging. When we feel disappointed with the world around us — be it ill fortune, politics, people with whom we disagree, our disappointment often warps into wanting to change those around us. Certainly, it is possible to win over hearts and minds to our perspectives, but there comes a line in which people and circumstances simply will not budge past. People can spend their entire lives raging against this type of disappointment over which they’ve no true control, and find themselves lost in bitterness. .
We cannot compel the world to alleviate our disappointment with it, just as a leaf can’t compel the wind to blow its way all the time. But, carefully walked, between these two ledges of disappointment is a narrow pass towards self-appreciation and satisfaction. . .
I have been wanting to do more street fashion nowadays. The good news is I will be doing this starting Wednesday. 😎😎 If you are interested doing these type of shoots. DM for potential collabs.
