Basket stars! Nighttime/daytime. Species probably Astrophyton muricatum.
During the day these echinoderms curl up and tend to look like a weird tangled spot on a soft coral (photo 2). At night they unfurl their arms to feed and look like beautiful lacy aliens (photo 1).
Often on night dives swarms of marine worms show up, attracted to divers lights. This particular night dive was especially wormy and those worms were photobombing with a vengeance. The swarm wrecked a lot of pictures but afforded this specimen quite the feast shortly after my light was pointed at it. I also got a worm inside my mask when I flooded it for a bit for a rinse which was a fun first for me. 😬
