The mother of American modernism, an independent spirit and female role model, Georgia O’Keeffe was an extraordinary woman. ✨ Georgia was born in November 15th 1887, and after attending Art school, she felt that realistic painting was too restrictive for her, and preferred to freely created designs instead of sketching them before painting. She loved sunsets and intense colors, and wanted to express her sensations about nature, music, and places. She bought a Ford Model A and learned how to drive in in 1929, visiting places like Ghost Ranch and Northern New Mexico, which she loved and inspired her work.
She has made over 200 paintings of flowers and one of them, Jimson Weed (1932) featured here, sold for $44,405,000 - the highest price paid for a painting by a woman.🙌⠀
Georgia was tough: she survived typhoid fever, measles, the 1918 flu pandemic, depression and a nervous breakdown (because she was heartbroken over her husband Alfred Stieglitz's love affair with Dorothy Norman, an American photographer). But in a cruel twist of fate, she suffered from macular degeneration which gradually decreased her eyesight. She hired several assistants to help her create art with her favorite visual concepts and vibrant imagination. The last painting she created on her own was in 1972, and after going blind, with the help of a friend, she sculpted and worked on watercolors, pastel, charcoal, and pencil until she was 96.👏⠀
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe opened 11 years after she died and it houses 3,000 of her works, it maintains her 2 homes and studios in northern New Mexico, a research center and library, and a variety of collections relating to O’Keeffe and modern art. We celebrate this remarkable woman's birthday today, a trail blazer and a beacon for artists and women all over the world.💛 #Matriark ⠀
I have a thing for National Parks and Flannel this Fall!! .
Carlsbad Cavern’s was so amazing that these pictures don’t do it any justice. I was in awe by its beauty but also felt like I was becoming part of The Descent cast! Checked another National Park off my list ✅

We drove out into the middle of nowhere through mountain tops, snow covered banks and down a long dirt road that seemed at times almost impossible. We happen upon a car that had been left in the middle of the trail obviously unable to pass the rough road. We parked our car and decided we were going to walk the rest of the way, two miles not a bad walk to start the morning. Then a kind man came along the road just as we were deciding what we were to do. He had a 4 x 4 vehicle that was not a rental and was able to get across the area that we cannot. He offered if we wanted a ride to the hot springs; in which we kindly accepted. We grabbed a bag and headed off. Travel is never knowing what the day might bring, who might meet, and what beautiful sights you’re about to see. As I sat in this volcanic hot spring looking out to the mountains that surrounded me, the sun melting the frost, a sense of calmness washed over me. This unclaimed area, free of tourists, or commercialism this is what I love most about travel. The journey to this beautiful area, the conversations and friends we met along the way, this fills my heart.
