Where were you when you decided what you wanted to do with your life?
In 2004, I packed up my Italian dictionaries, my 501 Italian Verbs book, and er baked beans and tea bags to go and like in Urbino, Le Marche, in Central Italy.
What happened next was a year of stumbling through verb endings and terrible pronunciations, learning to make arrabbiata and pesto from scratch, drinking rum and pear (and trying and failing to be sick in the piazza - sorry mum!), attending lectures in rooms adorned with Renaissance frescoes and ornate ceilings, riding on the back of Italian boys' motorbikes (sorry mum again), trekking up treacherous cobbled hills in the snow and ice, making more international friends than I had in my life (oh and the odd Italian), going to historical and solemn frog races, escaping to Croatia and Serbia when I got bored of the hills, and rolling my eyes at the next person who hoped I'd give them a free English lesson.
Of course, as an Italian and Philosophy student, I'd already decided that Italian was going to be part of my life.
And I'm proud to say it still is. My pronunciation is still a bit like 'Stanlio and Ollio' (Laurel and Hardy), but as the years stretch by, my knowledge and appreciation deepens even further.
Sadly, what with Brexit and all that, Erasmus is now in danger of dying out. Sure, there'll always be university exchanges, but it's going to be a lot harder if we're not part of this amazing scheme.
Have you ever lived or studied abroad?
My favorite way to learn a language is through cultural and linguistic immersion❗️ I highly recommend doing this if you have the time and the resources to take some time off of life to immerse yourself completely in a language ! 🌎 I had the opportunity to do this both in France 🇫🇷 through CAVILAM and Mexico 🇲🇽 through PICY.
In France, I lived in this town/small city called Vichy. 🧀 🍷
Everyone always asks me why I didn’t go to Paris and that’s because if I’m going for the culture, which is what I do, I find that the smaller population centers are more likely to retain their authenticity.
In MEXICO 🌽 🌮, I studied in the state of Yucatán where I ended up living outside of Mérida and in this small, predominately Maya speaking village where I got to be immersed in Yucatec Maya language. 🌳 🐷 🌽
My DREAM 💭 is to go spend a summer at the Middlebury language schools (which is awesome because randomly this highly rated and well known language school is in the same state that I’m from 🙃). So, what do you think guys? Would you go on a cultural immersion program? Would you? Where and for which/what language(s)? 🌍 ✈️ 😊
Holaaa!!! We live for this!! Watched this video a million times! This is not magic o! The earlier the better, the easier, the quicker!! If she keeps this up till she gets older, the job market will literally be at her feet. For people who walk about ‘oh, won’t the kids get confused...how about English etc etc’ as you can see, this 4 year old little girl is navigating her way beautifully through 7 languages!! Kai...If you haven’t started your child on some sort of language learning journey with all the resources out there...just try! It might not be too late. #speak#language#talented#multilingual#children#child#girl#english#french#spanish#german#italian Repost from @hotvocals using @RepostRegramApp - I can barely speak one 😩😂
