this run started out a lot better than it ended. I went into it fully intending to do 7 miles (3.5 solo, 3.5 with Bix) but I made it to maybe 1.5 and got hit by the wind. I was already struggling with my top (that band sometimes feels restrictive and sometimes feels fine) and then the wind was so much, it just did me in. and then I started feeling really ill. I don’t know, it wasn’t a good one. and then I meant to finish out the 7 tonight, but my stomach is still off and I’m exhausted and it’s cold and windy instead of being hot and windy now. but. next run will be better.
the things that make me feel stronger — are those that i challenge myself to do.🤩

No eye-cicles on today’s run, but I had @carrieunderwood’s “Blow Away” stuck in my head the entire time!! Man the wind was powerful!
I used to be a total wimp when it came to winter running, but a bit of motivation, lots of layers, and some tricks of the trade have me getting after it!🏃🏽♀️
My strategy for running on windy days is ensure that my first half mile or mile isn’t against the wind. This lets me get warmed up without getting discouraged!
I take the next portion head on into the wind. My mindset is to battle hard while I have more energy and get fired up to run faster knowing that once I turn around, the wind will be at my back!!
This makes the way back a breeze! (See what I did there😉) Today’s turnaround was even more exciting because I got to see a glorious sunset!
Although my run was awesome, I’m very glad to be indoors warming up with some spicy taco soup!😋 What’s your favorite food to eat in the cold of winter?! Let me know what you love or hate about this time of year!!⛄️

Today I’m thankful for sunny skies (despite a later start than usual for my workout) and access to a park that keeps its sidewalks somewhat clear of ice.
My hands were frozen during my warm up and cool down but I felt good during my speed workout. I missed being outside all weekend so this certainly made up for it.
W3D1 Speed Workout:
1.5 miles up
8x 600s @ 5k-10k pace w/ 400m recovery
1.5 miles down
8 miles total + lower body strength training
3 easy, progressive miles on the treadmill, because The Weather Network promised me 9 degrees and instead gave me minus something. A silent protest of sorts, if you will. 😆
Paul did some renos in our gym yesterday, which I am super happy about. I missed having a mirror to keep an eye on my form while strength training!

Where do you come up with your gym workouts?
I've been going to the gym for over 8 years now. So, I've learned a few things along the way. I've been to physical therapy, my husband is extremely knowledgeable, and I've also worked with people who focus on weight lifting.
For me, knowing the basics is where to begin and once you know those, your options are pretty much limitless. It's not hard to come up with new exercises or make an existing exercise more challenging. But, you have to be comfortable & confident.
Pairing complementary exercises together is a great way to change up a routine & make it more challenging. Changing up anything, always, is just a good idea in general.
Doing exercises on a bosu ball. Doing upper body exercises while standing on one leg. Adding, or increasing weight. Adding bands.
Change. It. Up. Mix. It. Up.
Three items I definitely have to have: bosu ball, swiss ball, & bands.
Exercise shown: 45 lb goblet squat paired with hamstrings on the swiss ball.

Beautiful but very icy today ☀️❄️ Had to throw my planned pace out the window and slow down. Better to focus on getting a safe solid run in than to hurry the pace and risk getting hurt. It’s also fine to cut the distance short (as I did too) in these icy conditions. We work a lot harder than on a normal run and the intensity is much higher. Although accompanied by a free-flowing fountain of snot, it turned out to be quite an effective workout 😅
