Edwin Parker Cy Twombly, Jr. (1928-2011) was the great American painter and sculptor famed for his highly sophisticated, freely scribbled, calligraphy and graffiti-like large format paintings.
During the 1950s, when he became a prominent figure of the New York group of artists, Cy Twombly developed a signature, instantly recognizable painting technique of gestural drawing, characterized by thin bright lines that appear to be scratched onto dark canvass. Twombly’s late works on paper took a turn toward romantic symbolism with their titles interpretable through painted shapes and words.
Willem de Kooning
Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was a Dutch American contemporary master and the leading artist of #AbstractExpressionism, an American movement strongly influenced by European Surrealist notions of automatism and free expression. De Kooning did not use preliminary studies but painted directly on the support, manipulating pigment in vigorous, uninhibited gestures, expressing his subjective apprehensions of the material world in both figurative and abstract compositions. During the late fifties he temporarily abandoned the depiction of the human figure, which had preoccupied him since the beginning of his career, to evoke parkway and urban landscapes in abstract terms.
The Police Gazette is a landscape painted on canvas using abstract elements. It was this painting that promoted Willem de Kooning amongst the most important abstract painters of the modern world. 🔻willem-de-kooning.org🔺

#GerhardRichter (1932) is a German painter and photographer, pioneer of the New European Painting movement, and one of the most important living visual artists, widely known for his #abstract and photorealistic works, combinations of paintings and photographs. He began his career and immediately drew attention with paintings consisting of enlarged copies of black-and-white photographs painted with only a range of grey color. Throughout his career Richter continued this, highly prolific and stylistically varied exploration of the mediums of #painting and #photography, as he moved freely between figuration and abstraction. Richter is also credited with the innovation of a blurred effect in which portions of his compositions appear smeared or softened.
‘Flashing surf’, 15cm x 15cm, acrylic and mixed media on a cradled panel. This is the smallest painting in my current solo show ‘Perpetual Flux’ with Cornwall Contemporary Gallery in Penzance. It was lovely to discover yesterday morning, via Instagram, that this had been acquired by a fellow artist. Thank you Annie! 😊I particularly enjoy the challenge of working on these small panels, exploring how to achieve a similar atmosphere as my bigger pieces. The exhibition ends this Saturday 20th October. @cornwallcontemporary
